4x4 owners will get their downfall in the next few years...

Road tax is rising fast, fuel prices are rising fast and dealers are reportedly refusing 4x4 and SUV's as part exchange vehicles, fearing they will be harder to sell on...

The end is near...

what a load of old baloney, I have lots of friends that drive Range Rovers and Land Rovers and they do so because they can afford to and they make great practical multi purpose vehicles

don't believe all the 'reports'

The fact is that even when the higher band road tax goes sky high it's still not going to be the major cost in running the vehicle. Of course any system where there is a separate tax in addition to the tax levied on fuel is never going to be "fair". People will just carry on and do what they want/can justify.

Is it fair that of the three cars in my household the one that does the least mileage (and the only one that's ever likely to do enough total mileage to have emitted more carbon dioxide in use rather than in manufacture) has the highest road tax? No it's not, but I just get on with it.

Anyway back on topic, if the Fiat 500 is a girl's car then my TR7 is definitely a hairdresser's car. I'll get my curling tongs...

Same here, car in garage does around 5000 miles each year... insurance group 18 and £405 each year road tax... really annoys me, but hey...

Of my two cars the lowest polluting one probably pollutes most due to the fact it does at least 3 times the mileage, it is also in the hightest tax band at £35 and the other 2 litre 132bhp no cat, fuel injection and around 20mpg is £0 a year(y)

Is that the GT Junior Eco that's £0 a year? :p You may find in terms of some pollutants the 500 is still less polluting than your other car even with being driven 3 times more though.

Wifes Subaru is £190 a year which is probably fair enough because it does drink fuel. Probably pollutes a lot but who gives a ****? :) I don't believe that CO2 is the cause of this global warming anyway and I'm not even sure we're causing it.

You wait for tax rises across the board to pay for all the flipping debt. Tax the flash cars, politics of envy. Bloody socialists. Blair, Mandelson and Lord Flippin' Benn et al. Preaching equality to us all. About as Labour as my a***. If everyone was driving zero emission cars the tax would be high on those. Load of old cobblers.

Off me soapbox and off for a swim.

You're almost certainly right on both counts, all the evidence (that I've looked at) points to the rise in CO2 being a result of global warming and not a cause.

There's no evidence that we're causing it either, we're in an ice age at the moment (an ice age is any time when there are parts of the planet permanently covered by ice) so sooner or later it's going to get warmer. Having said that it'll probably get a lot colder first as we're probably not actually coming to the end of the ice age, we're probably actually enjoying an interglacial period.

The CO2 emissions taxes are no different to any other taxes, simply a means to provide funds to run the country. If people choose to believe propaganda then let them.

I certainly notice the difference in motorists's attitudes when I'm driving my wife's 500 instead of my own. Hers is definitely in the 'cute' category compared to mine.
Some people absolutely HAVE to overtake it, others will practically kill themselves to get away into the distance. Never happens to my green By Diesel.
I don't know if the 500 is a "girls car" but some men seem to feel their masculinity is threatened if I'm keeping up with them.
I would love to get a pink 500 with Hello Kitty on the bonnet, an Abarth lump under the bonnet then go hunting for Audis. :D

well i dont care what they say i have had many sports cars ( lotus esprit, jaguars, Fto etc i also have a merc now i think its normal to have a little car to runaround in the fiat is very cool and its italian (y)ps i am male pps my wife has the merc :D:D:D so she says:slayer:

OMG I've got to agree with Maxi on this one. Climate change, Global warming, carbon taxes, it's just a business like any other business. We are always promised the hottest, driest summers ever, told that we will only be able to grow cactuses. Keeps lots of professors in work though.

The thing that gets me is that when something happens we get told it's because of global warming and we get told we're going to get more variable weather (isn't that the definition of British weather?) which is just a self fulfilling prophecy BUT the gobal warming nuts can never predict something BEFORE it happens.

Our household of two adults and one child has succesfully managed to be one car household, BUT with another child on the way AND in-laws moving to neighbourhood soon we have decided we do need another car - and a seven seater at that! It will be a weekend car, so not expecting big spending on petrol, but expect huge bills compared to 500... Still, cheaper than getting two more cars for our needs... Procreation and care for the elderly is expensive!!!;)

I think they are probably babe magnets ... I have had several men comment on my car when I've been out washing it in the street. They are just the coolest car you can have really, male or female its just a cool car. And no more or less "female" than a mini!

Everywhere I go people ask about it. Even the girl from Churchill insurance was asking if they were any good and the rental car people were also asking how fast it goes! The thing about the 500 is that it doesn't seek attention, it just gets it :)

All I can say is 'small car, big c**k' ;)

(Sorry to be so crude, just had to say it! lol :D)

I am conducting research into this.

When I sell my Saab 9-5 estate and collect my 500, I'll get back to you with the results!

My wife is really looking forward to collecting the new car and she doesn't even drive!!:p
