5 year warranty

5 year warranty

Well I have just found out that my brand new Bravo isnt covered by the 5 year warranty!

I bought the car at a discount from Arnold Clark. It was still on the boat from Ireland, bound for a dealership in Dundee and as a result we only knew the model and colour. The price was agreed and I picked the car up a week later after it was sent to Paisley instead of Dundee. However I was told I would only be eligible for the 3 year warranty.

I found out yesterday through Fiat that the car was actually pre-reg and as a result the 3 year warranty stands as i didnt purchase a brand new car. However the date it was pre-registered was 30th April, and I bought the car on 1st May. And it was brand new, It had literally 3 miles on the clock!

So despite the car was new into the country that week and was only ever destined to be owned by me as soon as it came off the boat, I lose out on my 5 year warranty because I got a discount because it was pre-reg!

Pants and not too happy!

surely you'd also lose the 5yr warranty because its a grey import.

new or not if it isnt a uk model it isnt eligible for any uk only deal.

Its not a grey import, its from Fiat in Italy bought as a bulk order by Arnold Clark, however it wasnt registered until it got to Paisley. I had understood that would be registered to me, but obviously for me to get the discount I did, they had pre-registered it first!

AC said I would get 3 years warranty, because the 5 year was only available at full list price using Fiat finance. At no point was the 0% offer muted (which I didnt know about at the time!).

It was down to this thread that I thought I would ask Fiat if I was eligible for the 5 year warranty. Needless to say if it had been registered to me it would have, but because it was pre-reg the day before I got it I only get the 3 years!

Just thought I'd better let people know!

i wonder, does that mean second hand cars will only have 3 years too, and to get 5 years you have to be the original owner?

5 year warranty only applies to cars first registered to private customers.

As yours was registered to a dealership/company first it did not qualify.

No amount of complaining to your dealership or Fiat will make any difference, as you are not the first owner.

The 5 year warranty will stay with all cars first registered to a private customer, regardless of how many times it changes hands during that time.

Which I think is a piece of nonsense! It was only registered the day before I signed the finance documents (when the car wasnt even in the country!), and the car was only ever destined to be bought by me before it got off the boat from Italy! It was a brand new car, the fact it was registered to the dealer and then to me within the space of 24 hours shouldnt make a difference.

Why can the warranty be carried over to future buyers of the car if a private customer is the first name on the V5, but not if its a dealer? I dont get that concept at all!

defo complain to fiat uk if you were not told you were buying a pre-registered car. it devalues the car for a start, plus the loss of 2 years warranty further devalues it. why should you be out of packet because the dealer either made a mistake or hid the truth.

It makes a difference because Fiat do not have a bottomless pit of money available to them. Fleet customers (which includes dealerships that pre-register cars to make them cheaper) get bigger discounts, whereas retail customers get a 5 year warranty.

Because that is what Fiat, the company providing and paying for the warranty, stipulate. Whether or not you "get it" is largely irrelevant to the fact that those are the terms under which the 5 year warranty is provided.

Absolutely. You agreed to buy a new car. Even if it was only registered one day before it was subsequently registered to you the car you got was not new.

it devalues the car for a start
No it doesn't.

plus the loss of 2 years warranty further devalues it.
That does though.

It wasn't a mistake. Nobody accidentally registers a car.
