hi all, problem just started, noticed a grinding noise and feel on changing down to 2nd gear. 1996 1.9td. any ideas

hi camionpilot, learnt to double declutch when taught to drive in police force however, this does not point to the cause, only a possible solution. i am worried if it is a synchromesh problem or am i trying to change gear at too high revs as it seems to lessen if i'm not so aggresive. could it be a gearbox oil problem?

Are you shifting down to second gear because you are ascending very steep gradients?

You may be attempting to downshift before the vehicle has reduced speed to allow a smooth shift.

The gearbox oil level should be replaced if due or level checked if not due for replacement.

Hi all, Had gearbox oil changed but the problem persists. Have decided to have "nd gear replaced. Next prob. finding one. Apparentley I need Part No. 9627508788 for an 18-35 ratio box. If anyone has one lying about I would be most grateful. I've been told that some Ducato gears are comparable with the Fiat Skudo. Again, any info. would be great. So on with the search. The van is still driveable, with care, by double declutching, dropping the revs. or missing out 2nd altogether. All the Best. Ian

I would think the synchro ring would be more the problem that the gear itself.
You could try some auto tranny fluid instead of gearoil. That often will rejuvenate brass synchro rings.
