Ok just brought a Fiat Brava, When going into second gear it makes a crunch sound.. Only does it in that gear. Any suggestions on what the problem is/might be??

synchromesh on 2nd has died :( my bravo was the same when i bought it. a gearbox from a scrapyard should cost £75-100 if you shop around, plus you'll get a month's warranty. fitting will cost £100-150 at a local independant garage (but supply your own good quality synthetic gear oil, it needs 3 litres). i dont advise DIY fitting unless you really know what you're doing, the bravo/a box is much more of a fiddle to fit than most others i've come across, i gave up and paid £100 for fitting in the end. damn nuts holding the nearside driveshaft onto the gearbox are a pain in the arse to get off.

slightly OT

So is it possible to replace a 1.2 gearbox with a close ratio 2.0 version?

What would the benefits be?

Ok then are there any other gearbox modifications that can be done? or that are of any benefit?

I do realise that trying to mod a 1.2 for performance is like burning money. But non the less the possibilities are fun to explore and do (watch this space - and wait for more bank holidays).

I have had the same problem with mine in 2nd gear. I mentioned it to my bf (he a boy racer) and he just said that the gear box still handnt been loosened up because of the way i drive. So ive been waiting longer to change into second and when im going down into 2nd ill put it in gear earlier (above 20mph is when mine crunches). So ive been doing that the last few days and it gears seem much nicer and smoother. It hardly crunches anymore and is easier to put it in second.

Try it out for the next few days :)

if it doesnt crunch as much when you change early (with low revs) its defo the synchromesh. if your syncromesh was working ok then 2nd gear would be at the required speed regardless of when you change, each synchromesh keeps each gear synchronised (at correct speed in relation to final drive to allow smooth change over), if they arent you get a crunch as the speed deficit is instantly overcome when the final drive (moving faster) is connected to the gear (moving slower as not synchronised). thats what causes the crunch, the cogs rubbing until they synchronise.

it is never because the gearbox needs to be 'loosened up'.

pls can you give me details where u bopught the gear box and where u fit it?

gearbox from local scrapyard (£75) with warranty for 3 months and removed ready for collection.
fitting at local garage (£100) because i couldn't get the damn thing off myself
castrol api-gl5 synthetic gearoil 3l (£12) because a smooth gear change in winter is important

I had the same problem with my bravo 1.2 16V (2000).

There was crunch to 2nd gear (only with high revs) and to Reverse.

The solution was to "balance" my clutch.
It's not a hard task. You just "play" with the screw nut at the engine bay.

Try it before you go for a new gearbox. ;)

The only sad thing, is that i have to do it every 3weeks/month...

TIP: Try it ONLY when the engine is cold, because it's sure you'll touch some metal, and believe me it hearts :D

i guess you mean adjust the gearbox linkage? if thats the case you have worn rubber bushes on one or more of the 3 linkages, replacing all the bushes should sort the problem out permanently. however the gearbox linkage on the bravo isn't adjustable. so when you play with the nut you must be simply tightening it to take up the free play in the bush.

also the linkages are made from hollow pipes and alloy parts that are easy to bend, sometimes a problem turns out to be a bent linkage part, easily replaced but difficult to diagnose.

Hey everyone, im new on the forum so sorry if what i say makes no sense!

I got my license 3 weeks ago and im a 17 male (but please dont assume im a boy racer because im just not! (y) )

As a newly licensed driver ive just inerited my mums car, and how i love it! :p

Its a Brava 1.4sx (1998) Thats got 51000 miles on the clock.

I was searching the net on this issue!

My second gear has started crunching when i try to either up or downshift.

There has been resistance when trying to engage the gear in the car for a while but now the gears are actually crashing. I'd assumed it was that the synchromesh had worn out and now the teeth are not meshed when i shift.
( i wouldnt say im a know it all but i have pretty good knowledge about how everything in cars work )

Ive found that when i over rev in 1st gear and try and engage 2nd it crashes, or when the revs are too high in 3rd and i try go down to second.

double -declutching stops the gears from crashing but its kind of inconvient and im no rally driver!

I was wondering if its possible to buy a syncro for the car rather than the whole gearbox as mines still in good condition apart from the 2nd gear issue!

So far on the car my dad and i have:

- Replaced the brake pads and drums on the rear wheels
- Replaced the pads on both front wheels
- Changed the oil,
- Replaced a blown gasket
- Replaced a burnt out air conditioning fan motor (it burnt out spewing smoke into the car (not nice ))
- Fixed a major dent in the back and touched up the paint after my mum backed into a wall

- Replaced the right rear headlight twice (my sister learning, backed into a steel post, and my mum hitting the wall destroyed it too!)

So ive done a far bit of work on the car and its taken a bit of a beating but it keeps coming back for more! :worship: and thats what i love

FIX IT AGAIN TOMMOROW -- Whatever! i love every bit of it!

So theres my story!

...Ricky

i wanted to replace my synchromesh, i've still got the gearbox sat in my garage waiting to be fixed. but i cant find anywhere that will supply one. fiat said they only sell a complete gearbox, and gearbox recon places dont sell parts but they're all willing to fix it for me.

it works out cheaper, quicker and easier to get a scrapyard box.

Just been reading this post, has l am getting a crunch into 2nd gear, but if l change slowly it is ok, its only when l put my foot down. and just reading that it could possibly be the clutch slave valve? has you probably know that this is fitted to nearly all cars today instead of cables. and does the same thing just by hydraulic.

Many thanks,

Lee

I've just checked my slave cylinder, and the rubber boot on it is totally split and looks very dirty (the piston) could this affect the operation of it???

Yes change the clutch slave cylinder and all will be well.... very common fault with Fiats, quite cheap and easy to do.

You may have been seeing flashing red "brake" symbols on the dash if the fluid has been leaking away... brakes and clutch share the same reservoir.

It could be worth bleeding the front and rear brakes at the same time as doing the clutch hydraulics... always nice to know that your brake fluid is new and clean and healthy!
