Driver's side (RH) wing mirror had been completely destroyed. Have bought below item online to only discover some issues:

Lucas Oil MM9354 Wing Mirror Cover: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike

1) Mirrors are not heated (and not sure if they did do a heated version?) but the original wing mirrors had TWO cable leads - I assume 1 is for the motor actuators and other is for the defrost for top and bottom mirrors.

2) Omitting the defrost function (we rarely use it), after installation, we discovered that when actually indicating (using the stalk), the lights would flash as normal but the clicking relay sound would go twice the speed - (the information console would show check wing mirror error). What is unusual is when you briefly nudge the indicator stalk, the error doesn't display and the relay clicking sound is at normal speed (same when indicating on passenger wing mirrors). It's only when you fully move the stalk to indicate that after the 1st few relay clicks (which is at normal speed clicking), it all of a sudden clicks twice the speed and the error message shows up.

What would be the cause of this momentary normal use of the indicator lights and then the computer somehow senses that there is an issue with the wing mirror? Keep in mind the flashing lights itself on the wing mirror continue to flash at same rate regardless of the check mirror message displayed.

We have even brought back the original wing mirror and plugged in the defrost cable (thinking the computer needs both cables attached).

The original broken wing mirror when hooked up does not present this problem and no error message displays.

The after market wing mirror came at a cost of $275 NZD (no defrost mirrors). A genuine Fiat replacement from the dealer nearly $700 (with defrost mirrors).

I'm curious if I need to dismantle the original wing mirrors to see if there's some funky electronics inside (ie a resistor?) Otherwise i'm stuck having to buy genuine Fiat parts.

There are lots of mirror options mate,
Non electric,
Electric,
Electric with temp sensor
Electric without sensor

At some point around 2011 (sorry don't know exact date) they switched indicator bulbs to a 16watt bulb which is larger in size but figment is same, the wattage difference is enough to throw out the bulb warning (van thinks bulb has blown) and double speed clicks

There are also two lens colours, 1 all clear (for a yellow bulb) or 1 with amber plastic mini lens inside for clear bulbs)

Had same argument with an aftermarket supplier (one of many) back in 2014 when I came across same issue,

Bulb works fine when testing with ignition on, but double clicks when driving

Bulbs available at fiat,

Other options are the arm lengths as well I forgot to mention

I'm glad i'm not the only one that has experienced this issue. Upon closer examination the Lucas replacement uses a bulb that is tinted orange while the original Fiat factory uses a clear bulb fitted behind an orange plastic, mini cover. At 1st I thought I could just change the bulb but discovered the outside temperature does not register anymore on the console (shows -.--C). I could live without the defrost function on the wing mirrors but not without outside ambient temperature.

I'm checking with local auto wrecker today to see what's available. The $700 replacement at the local Fiat dealer is the last resort.

Over here in uk there's loads on eBay, just need to order one electric With temp sensor (the second wiring plug) and correct arm length, prices approx 1/3rd the genuine cost

Then a case of ordering the bulb and lens if needed, lens Available on eBay too,

Ended up buying 2nd hand mirror off local auto wrecker. It came off 2009 van - the guy said lucky I brought in the original as 2013 was when they started changing things. The price $350 NZD which is steep (roughly 1/2 price of new). At least I was able to get it fixed in short time rather than dick with online / eBay shipping which can take over a month just to save a bit of $.
