Hi, my partners 500 decided it wouldn't start the other day and not sure why.Stop start hasn't worked for a while either so not sure if this has something to do with it. Start motor has been tested and works.
Anyone able to shed a light on what the issue maybe?
Thanks

Since it's turning over smartly enough, it's not the battery or the earth strap, so that's two of the most common failures out of the way..

Is it sparking? Put a spare plug into one of the plug caps and rest it on top of the engine (you can hold it vertically, as long as you have a rubber glove on, to prevent yourself being used as the earth). Don't take your plugs out to use one of those, since it might choose that moment to start and it won't end well.

If there are no sparks, then test the injection circuit. You can use a voltmeter or just one of those glass-bottomed bulbs with the metal tangs opened out and stuck into the injector connector block contacts. When you crank it, you should see some volts at the injector connector/the bulb should flash.

If you have no sparks and no fuel injection signal then it's a TDC/cam sensor problem. If you have one of the two working, then the problem is the other one.

does the fuel pump pressurise when you turn the key. Buzz from the rear seat. You will need the doors shut and radio off

Does the REV counter move slightly
as you turn the car over

Do the normal warning lights come on when you turn the ignition on

Does the key immobiliser light go out

Do you have jump leads or multi/voltage meter

Hi, no can't hear any noise coming from the fuel pump.
Yes rev counter does move slightly.
Where's the key immobiliser light?
Yes have jump leads and going to pop out in a bit for a voltage meter as I've lost one of the wires on mine.

Great
We have progress

REV counter moving

Equals engine computer is reading the crank sensor and passing the information to the body computer and dash

I believe it’s the bottom right symbol should not stay lit if the key is recognised properly.

Wow that was quick

Try switching the ignition on and off while someone gently taps the pump with the knuckles

I take it there isn’t

Fuel cut-off

Displayed on the dial

Tried gently tapping and still nothing.

No nothing pops up on the display.

Great

Just to make sure we are 100% on the right lines

Under the bonnet here there is a black cap like a tyre dust cap

Unscrew the cover and push the little pin down. With the pin down get someone to turn the ignition on briefly petrol should squirt out if working

Don’t get your eyes in the way

Petrol is quite hard to set on fire and soon evaporates however the fumes are dangerous so don’t do this in a garage

Ignore the pipe attached this is a special Fiat tool

No petrol coming out

Great that leaves

Fuse
Relay
Wiring
Pump

If I remember correctly you can check the continuity of the wiring by pulling the relay and measuring the ohms

Leave it with me a few minutes I will look up the info on the fuse relay and the wiring of the pump
