Grande Punto 2007 punto starting problems

My wife drove to work today in her 2007 punto dualogic. 3 hours later unable to start the car. A friendly mechanic was able to get the car started but tHen was unable to engage any gears...sitting in N (neutral) all the time.
Any ideas anyone out there?

Disconnect the battery and give it a good charge on a pulse charger.

How old is the battery? Is it the original?

Will give that a try, I think the battery is possibly the original, but not sure as car is a Japanese import....I'm in New Zealand.
