Hi everyone, I have a motorhome with a 2.3 fiat ducato engine. I recently found on starting that I had no throttle. When I stop the engine and restart it the throttle works.

I took it to a garage and they said that the EGR valve was defective. There was no engine light on when I took it. While driving back to base I noticed the engine light on. I stopped and phoned them and they replied it was on when they moved it from the forecourt.

Anyway I have ordered the Valve to the tune of £325 + vat (without the mechanic's hours) is this a fair price? And do you wisened gentlemen/ladies think this is the cause of the throttle issue? And would cleaning it surfice?

Hi DerekN

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "no throttle". No response when pressing the pedal, sluggish performance ?

There are two valves that control the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) process. The EGR valve controls the exhaust gas flow, and is low down on the UK passenger side of the engine. It's controlled by a thin rubber vacuum pipe driven from a solenoid valve up under the windscreen. The Throttle Body (TB) controls the clean air flow into the inlet manifold and is at the centre front of the engine. It is electrically driven. For some reason, garages sometimes call the TB the EGR valve, which is confusing.

Parts cost should be about £160 for the TB (plus an adapter cable if your original valve was an early type) and about £80 for the EGR valve. I fitted a new TB a while back and chose one made by Marelli, which seems to work well. Both these valves need a degree of dismantling of the front of the vehicle to get enough access to fit them. If you are paying someone else to do the dismantling then cleaning makes no economic sense.
