Hi everybody,

I've got a 2004 2.0 Diesel.
I realised on Friday my MOT was about to expire, so I quickly ran it down to one of these Halfords Autocentre places, horrible place, my INDY did not have time.

Anyway, the car failed on 3 points: Rear braking uneven, leaking power steering pump and low power steering fluid.

I have not actually had a look myself yet, but I'll be taking up to my INDY next week, what should I be looking for in the mean-time, is it more likely to be the actual pump or a pipe? Never had this problem on any car, is it serious?

Should I be worrying?

a power steering hose sprang a leak on mine last year. Local indy had new hoses made up by a company called Pirtek, can't recall the cost but it wasn't a lot. The hoses are high pressure so can't do a bodge with jubilee clips!

thanks normd, good advice, will see what happens when I take it over to my indy. I have read somewhere that the pressures involved are enormous! Let's hope it's just a hose!

Well, I took it to my Indy who was less than impressed with Halfords!

Firstly the leak was minor in the extreme! It was on a seal which was easily handled in his experience with that stuff you can pour in, and it worked perfectly!

Secondly the braking evenness was measured and it was insignificant, replaced pads as one side had stuck and worn out unevenly. None the less it would have passed without doing the work!

Bunch of idiots at Halfords! I'm not even taking it back to them for a partial retest as that would give them more money. Prefer to just pay my Indy the full fee and be done with it.

and the moral of the story...?

Support your local Indy! (y)

Partial retest is free as long as the car does not leave the place where it was tested.

And yes, always support your local INDY!
