Recently bought a motorhome based on a 2001 Ducato 2.8jtd.

Initially noticed a strong diesel smell when driving.
It doesn't appear to be leaking much diesel. When looking from underneath there was just the odd drip dripping off the oil filter that had dripped from the injector pump above.
Not knowing much about this engine is it likely that it could just be the seal/gasket between the pump and the engine or is it more likely to be the pump itself?
If it is the pump would I be looking for a new/recon unit or are they serviceable?

Thanks

First check fuel hose and jubilee clip, if its from the regulator or the piston covers then seal kits are available on ebay,

Thanks, I'll take a look. Pretty difficult to see anything to be honest. Doesn't help that it appears to be quite a small leak.

Stick some kitchen towel around the joints and spigots, regulator, third piston solenoid, check regularly whichis wet / wettest that will narrow it down.

OK well I've tried to find the source of the leak but no joy.
I don't think it leaks much/at all when it's at idle but under load it leaks quite a bit and soaks the whole area making it difficult to find.

Would I be better just to replace the whole pump?? I see I can get a recon unit from various places for around £300.

If I go down this route, how easy are they to replace, is it straightforward for a DIY job or is it best left to an expert?

If anyone has a DIY guide for this I would appreciate it.

Cheers.

I would'nt replace the pump without finding it, could be a simple as an injector pipe not sufficiently tight. First I would make sure the injector pipes are torque up.
