I’ve searched and a few people have had this but I can’t see a resolution.

My clutch was replaced a few hundred miles ago, in case this is relevant.

This morning the battery was low so I jump started the van (2005 2800) and a red warning light started flashing. It’s a regular on-off, not an intermittent flicker as you’d get with a chafed wire.

It looks like a gearbox warning light (see image if I can make it work - box with a stick coming out). It’s not in the Fiat manual. I searched online and the only thing I could find is an auto gearbox warning light. This is odd as I don’t have an auto gearbox.

Am I safe to drive it long distances, and anybody know why it’s triggered and what the resolution is?

I have seen this reported on ar least two previous occasions. One poster had not recognised the icon, and likened it to a car with raised bonnet.
I think that it is due to a fault in the instrument panel, which is largely electronic. If it presented on my 2,8jtd manual, I would be inclined to consult the company "Cartronix".

I would however first checked for errors with MES...

As a 2.8jtd owner, I beg to differ, and I would skip that step. Unlike in the later x250, the instrument panel is not a node on a complex canbus network. Further any errors origination from the engine should illuminate the engine warning light.

OK, I won't discuss with that :) You know this model much better :) However what about possible the BCM errors? The OP writes about a flat battery and jumpstarting the van...
