Hi,
I have a motorhome based fiat 2.8 jtd 06 reg. It seems really low on power on hills/inclines, struggling in 5th gear. I think it may be the egr valve sticking on the side of the turbo unit ?, anyone any thoughts please ???.

Vacuum I'm sure, it's attached to the side of the turbo itself and connects to the turbo with a rod. I'm thinking that its a wastegate valve and it may be stuck/rusted open a little thus causing pressure loss.

Thanks, whats the best way to free it off ? and what should it actually do when it is free ?. More importantly if it IS seized would this affect power ?.

Thanks again

Glynn

If its seized your boost will be blown off down the exhaust, use wd40 or penetrating oil give it time to penetrate and manually open and close it.

I have a similar problem on my 52 reg. 2.8 JTD. It has a MAM of 5 ton and is fitted with a Tunit box.

It is returning a MPG figure of around 23. If I was loosing power as described above, would my MPG be adversely affected?

I have been on to Tunit to have the box checked out but they will not put me on to a local dealer. They want to do everything over the phone but the guy I need to speak to will not be available for a few days.

What a way to run a business!

23mpg sounds fine for a vehicle with that capacity and a tuning box.

Take out the tunit box and see how it goes.

I assume the tunit box plugs into the rail pressure sensor nd fools the ecu into putting a higher pressure into the rail, its a seriously steep price for that.

You can achieve the same thing by swapping the rail pressure sensor from the 2.3jtd or another bosch rail sensor.

Thanks Paddy.

I am not familiar with common rail diesels so I will need to find out a bit more to educate myself. Do you have any suggestions, as like many others, I can be easily persuaded to part with money by a smooth talker. :D

I don't suppose that a Fiat dealer would swop a different sensor, I would prefer to do it myself. As they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Just an update.

I was getting a bit frustrated with the Tunit company. A few emails went back and forth but I should not have fretted.

They asked me to post them the box, which I did last Thursday. They rang me on Friday afternoon to say they had checked it and it was OK. As it was a 2004 box, they 'flashed' it with a newer programme and I had it back by 10 am last Saturday. That is what I call good service and cheap enough too. The total cost was £20 which included p & p.

The guy said that I should notice a difference with the improved configuration of the box. So, if anyone is using an older type Tunit box, you could do the same as me.

BTW, I have not had the chance to run the van yet but will give it a good run this week.
