Hi guys I'm new here, I have a 1.9td motorhome that seems to have the dreaded 2nd gear crunch, it also has a very mild crunch into 4th 🤦‍♂️

I'm assuming the synchos are worn, is there anything I should try/test before I pull it out?

Any recommendations for buying gearbox parts, a recon box or somewhere that could repair mine? I'm in the west midlands but can take the box out and drop it off within a reasonable distance.

First make sure there is oil in it.;)
Given the age several on Forum have tried to get gearboxes repaired, parts are getting scarce, perhaps some one on Forum has a recommendation.:)

Hi Jimmy
We had most of the gears crunching, changed gearbox oil @2.7 litres, some gears went quiet, anyway after searching, found Common Lane Transmissions, Tyldesley, Lancs, they renewed all th syncros, new clutch, oil etc, £2400 , drives like new now, hope this helps

Hi, I own a 1996 1.9td and have gone through the 2nd gear crunch. Had it repaired, £1300, by 1st class repairer in Leeds. 2 years later has gone again. Decided to take the advice of Derek Mathewson (Bangers and Cash fame) "commercial vehicles should always be stared off in 2nd." This works really well depending on your driving skills. Basically, Start the vehicle and engage 2nd. Pull of and drive normally. When wanting to slow down or stop, use the brakes. When vehicle comes to a halt, engage 2nd gear ready to go again. On steep hills, start off in 1st till she clears the brow then go into 3rd. The 1.9td has enough torque to do this with practice. I'm doing this because I no longer trust the quality of the replacement 2nd gears. Steve Brears, the engineer who repaired my box in the first place, has a great reputation in Leeds and does most of the local gearbox repairs. I trust him but not the available parts which, by the way, are as rare as rocking horse s***. All the Best, Ian.

Hi Garygsax, Give my driving method a go. It would be interesting to see how someone else copes. It could prove invaluable to other owners of older Ducatos and save you some brass. All the Best, Ian.

Hi Cid
Already do,what you described, when I remember? but sometimes when the revs are right 2nd goes in quietly, we're in the process to sell it, will have to explain to the buyer why it does it, why its not repairable, its something you get used to,blah blah, all the other gears are fine since we had done.
