Hi

My sister was travelling down to my house from Scotland in her 1995 hymer 2.5td. She was 1/2 ml from my house when she phoned to say the gears would not engage. She turned of the engine and waited a few mins. Starting the engine she managed to limp to my house in 1st gear. Any thought as to the problem?

Can she engage all the gears with the engine turned off; if so it is likely that the clutch has developed a fault (snapped cable?)

Yes , she can move the gear stick when engine off.

If she can get it into gear with the engine off (presumably she got to your house by selecting 1st and then starting engine) but not with engine running, then it is almost certainly a fault with the clutch or clutch cable.

I'd have thought she would have noticed a difference in the feel of the clutch pedal if the clutch cable has snapped or seized (respectively giving a loose and hard feel to the pedal); the clutch cable can also stretch and need adjustment but this will show up as a gradually increasing difficulty in selecting gears rather than an instant failure.

If not the cable then it is likely to be internal failure of the clutch mechanism , though again I would have thought there there would still be a different 'feel' to the clutch pedal.

Is she not in a breakdown scheme which she could call as she is in fact away from her home? Whilst they may not be able to fix it they may well suggest where the problem lies.
