Hi All,

I own a Ducato 1993 2.5 camper with the 8144.67 engine.
Flat roads easy 110 kph, uphill = disaster, fast drop to 80kph and lower, I hate to annoy the lorry driver I just overtook
I used to have a 2.5D Peugeot J5 similar size and this was able to keep up its 90kph even when towing a trailer, similar engine power so I'm suspecting gearing is off .

That's why I'm trying to gather information on the gearbox... No idea what my current gearing is, can anybody tell me what my gearing is?

I read these gearboxes came with two different 5th gears, I would need to remove the 5th gear cover and count the teeth as I don't know which 5th gear I have. Anybody know what gearings were available?

Also it seems the 2.5TD has a shorter final drive, this might also be an option for me if this gearbox is a straight swap (hence my question to know the gearing, this way I can figure out myself if this is a viable option...)

Next one, the later 8140.67 2.5D engines seem to have a little more power, does anybody know if these (and the gearboxes) are a straight swap? Again here, what is the gearing? Dis these also come with two different 5th gears?...

I know I'm asking a long but related series of questions here so big :worship: to whoever spends some time replying.

Thanks for any info on the Sofim engines and corresponding gearboxes you can provide! Can anybody point me in the right direction to get a hold of a manual for a 1993 Ducato?

Post your vin number I should be able to check.

Thanks Corcai, will note it down and send this to you asap ;-)

Hi Corcai,
I just sent you my vin number in a pm, thanks for checking :)

Your 5th is 45x33 the 1.8 ton version was 43x33 with a lower diff also. Not that big a difference just changing the 5th gear. I wonder has someone put on larger wheels and tyres. If the gearing is too tall putting on lower profile tyres would help.

Thanks a lot Corcai,

Is the 1.8 ton equal to the 2.5TD?

As regarding the final drive I read somewhere the 2.D5 gearbox (like mine) has 12x62 and the 2.5TD boxes is 13x62... Is this correct?

So indeed, maybe installing a 1.8t gearbox (= lower ratio diff and lower ratio 5th) on my 2.5D with 14 inch wheels will make enough difference...

The 2.5TD (1.8t?) is equipped with 16 inch wheels, mine has 14 inch wheels...
So the question is the same, has anybody fitted lower profile tyres or 14 inch wheels on a 2.5TD/1.8t?
