Technical 1988 Ducato Timming/Injection problems

Hi all,

Looking for some help for the following if anyone is able??

We have a 1988 (F reg) Fiat Ducatto motorhome with the 2.5D 8144.67 engine.

The timing belt has been changed, all drive cogs etc were locked out with pins etc during the process and the belt was a struggle but got it on and marks match up with marks placed on old prior to removal etc.

So the problem is now when starting she take a fair few turns, over-revs initially, presumably burning off any surplus diesel and then drops down to idle however she still produces a lot of grey/white smoke.

does anyone have timing routine so we can ensure that the injection pump is in correct time? or any further insight to what may be wrong? could we be a tooth out on injection pump?

does anyone have any information on the injection pump, all I can find is the info for J5s etc.

The Sofim 8144.67 is an indirect injection engine.

From personal experience, I can state that at least some indirect injection diesel engines, can run whatever the injection timing.

Fine adjustment of injection timing on radial injection pumps is usually performed by rotating the pump body using the slotted mounting holes, while observing timing marks on the pump. These timing marks are probably hidden behind a small cover, and may need to be observed via a mirror.

There should be a makers (Bosch?) label on the pump, which will provide the pump details.

Armed with this information try this or similar website, that offers pump manuals, and exploded diagrams.

It is my understanding that white smoke may indicate retarded injection, but do eliminate any possibility of a coolant leak.

May I stress the importance of cleanliness when working on injection systems. Small particles getting into the pump, or fuel lines, can cause expensive damage to pump, or injectors.
