Afternoon

I'm new to the forum. I just picked up a 1980 Fiat Spider 2000 - had been sitting around for a bit - would not start. Replaced the starter relay and now it cranks, but I'm not getting power to the fuel pump - pump worked if i jump from brown to green on the relay. I have 12v at the brown wire a the fuel pump/injector relay but only getting 8-9 volts on the red/black wire - I checked and only getting 8-9 volts at the red wire at the ignition switch.....bad ignition switch?....corroded contact inside?

Hopefully I've got the right diagram, but 12v feed to the relay comes in on 88y (brown/white and then via an inline fuse 04524) and then out to the pump on 88d (green/black) ?

(I've marked with red arrows)

Hi The best solution is a wiring diagram and a multimeter to measure voltage
If yours is a fuel injected car it runs on an ECU and if you start guessing and crossing wires together you could do a lot of unintended damage
The wiring is pretty crude by modern standards, the connectors are basic and pins readily oxidise and several circuits especially those on the ignition switch carry high current (10-15Amps) which will do a lot of damage very quickly!

I forgot to say work your way through each circuit methodically confirming its function

Thank you, got the ignition switch issue resolved - replaced the started relay and now it cranks but will not start - I replaced the dual relay and have power to the fuel pump and its works - I installed new injectors and even a new ECM....I even checked the cold start injector and it does spray

If I spray starter fuel it runs for 2 seconds, so I assume I have spark, but I can't get it to start.....

Any ideas of what else I should be looking at?

Thank you,

George

Just an idea..have you removed the spark plugs and checked them? I'm wondering if they might be a bit fuel fouled (wet) from all the cranking on the engine, perhaps they fire on the starting fluid but not gas?
I encountered something similar after pulling my spider out of long term storage, after I used my spark plug cleaner and put them back In, it started on the first crank..anyway the spark plug tips are something you should check...Good luck, and it sounds like your getting close!

Evening,.....an update to my 1980 Fiat Spider 2000

I replaced the injectors, and if I leave the 1st injector unplugged I was able to start the car.....but the minute I plug in the injector the car dies.....

I repaired a small gas leak at the inline filter, replaced missing nuts on the exhaust manifold to get rid of the leak.

I have a small leak on he braided lines from the automatic transmission I need to deal with now, But want to resolve why motor dies and/or will not start with all injectors connected.....

I would remove and temporarily move that injector to another cylinder, and retest

If the fault moves you know what the problem is, if it doesn't move you'll also know where the problem lies.

Thank you,

I pulled the plugs and cleaned them - I also replaced the fuel injectors. If I leave 1 injector unplugged I was able to get the motor to start, but the second I connect the injector the motor dies and it will not restart - with 1 injector unplugged it cranks and starts, and I can keep it running...

Further diagnosis required.....someone mentioned to check all the ground connections.
