Hi all,
I have become the proud owner of a 1962 RHD multipla.
I've restored the body and have just started looking at the engine.
I think I may have an engine out of an 850?
When bought the rear end had been extended by approx 2 inches, and now that I've returned it back to standard the engine looks possibly too big.
I can probably get it to fit but i'm just a bit confused. I've read somewhere that the 850 engines needs lots of mods to make it work.
Can someone please help me identify what I actually have please?

Thanks
Phil.

The 850 (or 903cc) engine WILL fit into the back of the Multipla, in the same hole as the 600/600D engine. Why it had the back extended by 2 ins, I can give no sensible answer except, had a previous owner fitted a Fiat "FIRE" engine? These 1098cc 4pot engine are regularly fitted into the back of 126 cars in Poland, but being that they are longer than the 126 engine, the normal 500/126 rear engine mount won't fit and they therefore require a sort of "sky hook" mount.
The main difference (other than capacity) between the 600D engine (the 600 engine is different in that they have a 'spin-on' oil filter and not a 'centrifugal' filter) and the 850/903 engines is that the turn in opposite directions! Both of the '850' engines will bolt onto the 600 gearbox, so no problems there. I colleague of mine ran a 600, with a 850 engine in it all the way round America and Mexico--basically he fitted a 600D camshaft (and bearings), a 600D oil-pump, a 600D starter and a 600D distributor---he didn't bother to change the pistons round, left them as they were (so technically speaking, the 'thrust' side was therefore on the wrong side). I do have some info regarding the Multipla, so if it will help you, contact me [email protected]
