i agree completley, im 22 with 4 years ncb atm, just insured a hgt in my name, fully comp with work useage and unlimited mileage and mods declared (alfa door handles, lowered, 17's, exhaust and induction and a chip) for just over 700 squids  :D

Well I'm 23, 1 accident (last 3 yrs) Bravo HGT Fully Comp Legal etc, £660 with NO no-claims discount as was insured under my mum's policy before, which I paid for along with the car!

From what I remember when I insured my mum they didnt ask how many years no claims she had, just age how long she had been driving and the usual any convictions or accidents in the last 3 years crap.

Im with elephant but a little while after i took it out 'bell' seemed to change their marketing and were even cheaper when i got a quote from them. these 2 were the best for me with 0 ncb. so i'd start there and add a parent

Who wants to sponge of their parent's until they are 25, not me, whose parents would let them, not mine. At the end of the day i bought my car myself, I insured it myself in my name, i fix as much as i can myself, im 17, im skint, but at least i have the pride to say i payed my own way and got everything off my own back, sure there have been times i have needed to borrow money, but i always paid it back, unlike lots of kids i know, who's mummy and daddy just bought them the latest clio/corsa.

reading that i dont think it says anywhere that he was sponging of his parents to pay for his insurance and it isnt the law that you have to be driving when you are 17 i passed my test when i was 22 and i pay stupid insurance for my car but hey i like my car and dont want anything to happen to it so i will gladly pay whatever price it is to protect my car and any unfortunates

I think where you live plays a big part in the price of your insurance aswell. I guess two 19 yr lads could have the same car but live in different places and one quote is going to be higher than the other.

Once you are over that 25 hump, insurance is dead cheap! I paid £1200 fully comp with Bell last year on a 1.3 Fiesta. This year, since I turned 25 it halved. Bell quoted me £900 so I went with Zurich instead for £600. When I got the Punto it saved me another £60.
Paying a higher excess cuts your premiums too.
Driving 3 yrs with 1 years no claims.

This is why when I first started learning to drive in my Astra, my brother and I took the plunge and forked out £1280 for the first year (only a 1.4i mind :p) which dropped to £770 last year and £352 full comp this year lol.

It pays to start early so you don't get stung when you get your first insurance, hence why we never went on our parents insurance (they wouldn't let us anyway lol) :)

i didn't get insurance in my name until i was 25. it saved me a bundle, and once you're 25 its affordable even with 0 NCB :D

the money i saved is far more than the extra its costing me now. my insurance is only £400, i saved more than that every year i was insured in someone else's name.

if you add up each years insurance the way i did it up until i get 5yrs NCB, then compare that to what i would have paid if i had it in my name up until the same year, surely i've saved a couple of grand at least.
This is waht I did except I got my own when I was 22 as it was more affordable then when I was 19.

Who says you don't have to pay for the insurance while its on someone else name?

I Paid for it, it was just on my dads name as when I wanted Insurance at 19 everyone wanted nearly £3000 from me.

Where as I saved over 50% as a second driver.

:D 19 yr old - £420 on a 1.2 under mums name but i get no claims :p i blame the boobs

as i keep trying to explain... you dont get no claims... what you get is no claims for direct line only.... so what this means is that once you come off of your mums insurance, you'll have to go with direct line if you want your "no claims"... which in my experiance are v.expencive... they are the ones who tryed to charge me £3000 for my 1.2 8v punto...(n)(n)(n)

Hayley I think you mean :p lol

But Im pretty sure Owen is right about that, iirc Direct Line give "complimentary No Claims Bonus" which means that come renewal time they will give you the equivilant (well almost) of 1 years NCB on your renewal quote on the condition that you accept their quote and stick with them for another year.

Its their way of making you think that you're getting something for nothing. Technically you are saving money but they can afford to do this because what they actually give you is a lot less than 1 years NCB and they do quote your renewal to reflect that.

As for your name or your parents:
I went under my mums name when I was 17 for the first year of driving for two reasons, firsty it was cheaper (by a whole £150 lol) and secondaly because I was only 17 no one would allow me to pay for my policy monthly and I just couldnt afford to hand over £1500 in one lump sum (considering I had just scraped together £150 to buy my first car )

Once my renewal was due I got rid of that car and braught the Punto which went straight under my name and insured fully comp which I am still paying now that Im 19.

So my insurance history looks something like this:
17 years old - 0 years NCB - Clio 1.4 - £1350 tpf&t - Under my mum's name
18 years old - 0 years NCB - Punto 1.2 - £1580 fully comp - Under my name
19 years old - 1 years NCB - Punto 1.2 - £945 fully comp - Under my name

I am currently getting quotes on a Punto GT3 in the region of £1000 tpf&t under my own name. This will be slightly reduced in March when I come to get one because I will have turned 20 :D
