Technical 185/65/R15 tyres on alloys

Just a little question:

Need two new front tires. At this moment the car has two 185/55/R15 tyres on the front. Two new tires of the same size will cost me about 100 euros each, without mounting.

A 185/65/R15 tire will cost me about 60 euros. A lot cheaper so. I know that my speedo will change a bit (120 km/h will be 127 km/h).

Or will 185/60/R15 be better? These cost about 64 euro's each.

My car has those standard alloys:

What size are the tyres on the rear? If they are 185/55 then they have to match.

But i think you can have wider/thinner tyres though. E.g 195 or 175

have you looked at the difference in cost for 195/55/15
changing from your current 185/55/15 to a 185/65/15 would give an increase in size of 6.5% which is pretty significant. where as a 195/55/15 is only around a 2% increase
another thing to remember is that if you have alloys the wider tyre will also help prevent kerbing

depending on costs a 205/50/15 would give you a virtually negligible 0.33333% increase in size but you would need to know if your wheels could take that much wider tyre

But if you have ABS and big difference between front and rear tyre sizes will cause your ABS system to register a fault, putting the ABS light on and stopping the system from working

Understand tyre size OP

A tyre size comes like so
185/65/15R 82V

the 185 is the width of the tyres in MM

the 65 is called the aspect ratio
IE 65% of the Width of the tyre is the height of the sidewall
15 is the size of the rim which it can fit
R - Stand for radial - basically the tyre construction is all at 90deg of the internal ply's of nylon/steel cords

82 is a weight rating
V is a speed rating which the tyre can hold but shouldn't exciede

So the punto standard alloys are
185 / 55 / 15

ie 55% of the width is the sidewall

You are increasing this to 65% - meaning a much bigger sidewall
all this is going todo it make the tyres abit more roll'able under heavy cornering
So basically - expect more understeer

its withdrawn from the eu because of these stupid stickers that would give it a low rating on noise and consumption. if there was a sticker for keeping you on the road under normal driving in the rain it would get an A rating. but the eec think noise, consumption and stopping in a straight line are more important than staying on the road under normal driving. its a shame because i see more people post on here that they have slid on a bend or roundabout than i do couldn't stop in a straight line.

its still in production but not for the eu market for us they produced PX4 Proxes 4. people who have gone from the t1r to this new tyre (that gets a high rating on the stickers) say they are crap and wont never buy them again

On the rear i have two 195/55/R15 tyres. The previous owner changed the 185/55 tyres on the rear to two of those.

The tyres i was looking for are Continental Conti Eco Contact 5. There EU tyre label says B for Fuel, B for stopping distance and about 70 dB for volume.

Thanks for the clarification. I was just concerned if a 185/65/R15 tyre will fit the alloy and will not rub against the car in cornering.

I'm looking for two 195/50/R15 tyres now. There rolling distance should be the same as 185/55/R15. So no ABS faults etc..

Any good experience with these Continental Eco Contact 5 tyres?

So what do I replace my beloved T1s with, when they eventually wear out?

They (185/55-15s, on Sporting alloys) have made a massive difference to the way the Punto handles (over the stock 165/70-14s, on steelies...) -- both in the wet and when it's dry. No more spinning, when setting off at gravel- and dirt-strewn country junctions; and excellent grip along our local, winding roads -- even in the rain.... :slayer:

My suspicion is that I'll have to pay a lot more per corner for something as good... -- even if I change to 195/50-15s.

its the same storey for the steelies
Stock is 165/70/14

BUT If you swap to
175/65/14 or was it 175/ 60 /14 there cheaper rubber for the same tyre in the stock size

So Benifits
Wider tread = More grip
Sidewall is the same - So no real difference rotational value
Spend less on decent rubber?

Win Win win

I too will be swapping to 195/50/15 when it comes to changing mine
looking at some nice Uniroyal Rainsport 2's as there meant to be very very good in the wet
And decent in the dry

The `real’ world comes with measurement, examination & tests. I can see comments such as “massive difference” or “excellent grip” maybe a great asset to the advertising department – but the guys in design, the laboratory & production departments will fall-about-laughing.

I'm just staying with 185/55 tyres. Found some from Hankook, same price range as two 195/50's from Continental. Performance sort of the same, Hankook's only perform better on snowy roads.

How is this default tyre dimension determined for you guys in the UK? Can you just slap on any tyre size?

Over here we have a piece of paper called a homologation. States where the car is from, that it meets various legal crap etc. The most important thing for young men such as myself is the homologated tyre dimensions; what you are allowed to stick on the car.

All Mk2a Puntos over here have a choice of 165/70/14, 185/60/14 and 195/45/15.

Stupid choice from the factory regarding the 15 inch tyre. A slightly rare tyre and expensive. Sure, it's awesome in the corners, transforms the car, but it's dumb. If we happen to put a 195/50 on the car, a cop can kick you with a ticket for unauthorised accessories on the car and in case of a crash you take the fault, because they deem you were driving in a non compliant car.

If you want a new dimension added to the homologation paper you need to go to an MOT place, they say some long words and write the new dimension into the paper. Only problem is they charge 70€ for the privilige...
