Oil leaks are not always something to be fixed - mine has a good old weep from the rocker gasket but since it's not losing enough to worry about i won't bother fixing it.

Coolant - get a fine tipped marker and make line on the coolant bottle where the water is when cold, do the same when hot and keep an eye on the level. If it starts to drop noticeably below the lower mark then you have a leak worth worrying about. Also check that you have enough coolant in the first place, you can see the marks on the tank that tell you where the levels should be.

Problem with leaking from the radiator and pipes at the front is that when you park on a level or pointing nose down a slope, the water collects in the lower front edge of the bumper and may not show as a leak. Have a look directly under the bumper at the big rubber pipes and see if there are drips / damp patches around them. If there are, poke a finger in the liquid, sniff / taste it - if it's a sweet but sickly smell / taste then you have a coolant leak.

If you really can't get under it to see, then use a makeup mirror and the flash on your mobile to make it easier to see around corners. If no mirror, then record a video on the phone whilst you move the phone around underneath the front of the car.

If it hasn't had the following then maybe it's time to think about getting them done.

1. Oil and oil filter change.
2. Coolant flush and change and maybe a water pump at the same time.
3. Exhaust repair.

Nearly always cheaper to get one good garage to quote for the lot. Ask about the http://www.goodgaragescheme.com - less chance of being ripped off if you go buy reccomendation.

if you put a post up in here , asking if any one lives close to you , just like Lecook , ( i fogot the lads username now goes to lees for help )

so if some one is close to you give them a offer say cover there fuel or something and they may come around and show you how its done

if you were closer to me id of happly helped , dont be scared to ask were a friendly bunch in here :)

What a lovely bunch of guys you are - I feel like I've had a big hug :)
I felt a bit sorry for myself when I posted I'd discovered the oil leak and the blowing exhaust - mainly because I thought the car was now ok and was so chuffed that the gears no longer grate (many thanks to your advice) but because I'm now unemployed, and have little money for essential car repairs (never mind the non essential ones)

I will bear in mind about getting over to Somerset, but do you think I should start a new thread asking if anyone can help locally then?
(I wouldn't expect anyone to repair the car for free, but I can't afford to pay a garage :()

Thank you for cheering me up (there really are some good and kind folks out there after all :))

The only other member down this way that I can think of is hame41 who I think is in Exeter

Thank you, but I think I need to hope someone will volunteer rather than asking individuals to help on the forum. It just wouldn't be fair to make anyone feel obliged, or too embarrassed to say no :)
(I hope that makes sense)
