General 160mph uno

General 160mph uno

Renaults have generally good chassis too as do Fords and Peugeots, which is something that the old 80's tech trailing arm/McPherson strut set up in the Uno can't quite match.

Ha - that'll be the same 80's tech in the Stilo then ;)
and not in the Tipo/Punto?
Seriously, I notice many of the manufacturers have gone back to a torsion beam arrangement for the rear end, e.g. Volkswagen with the Golf, something they actually started in the 70s!

Meanwhile I can't actually drive my Uno over 120mph... it feels like a cork on the ocean... :) so I do agree with you really, it's just that there seems no simple answer as to what makes a chassis 'good'.

Just looking at the figures, how does he expect to get a higher top speed than the coupe, with less power? The reason i compare to the coupe, is the coupe's aerodynamic shell. The ut is like a wall in comparison. The same way a scooby with 225bhp isnt going to break 150 very easy because of its shape.

It's more about the size. A Caterham doesn't look very 'aerodynamic', but it is fast... Same with a motorcycle. I doubt the Coupe is actually more aerodynamic than the Uno, it just looks that way. It probably has the same Cd as the Uno's 0.33 (which is good - a Lotus Esprit was over 0.40 and you know what they look like, not exactly 'a wall'). But anyway, the drag is the Cd multiplied by the frontal area, and the Coupe is probably a larger area than the Uno as it's quite a bit wider. Wind noise is more noticeable in the Coupe - more turbulence around the rear end - but that's probably because the road noise is less.

Not sure about the Subaru. If you meant the SVX, then I'd have to disagree, having driven one near that speed ;)

Hi Alex,

Yeah sorry about your Stilo, it's all the same stuff from the Bravo which was from the Tipo. Incredibly enough for the new Bravo out later this year Fiat are still using the same ancient hardware. As the saying goes 'same **** different day'. Unfortunately none of this has been implemented to benefit us the users, instead it's all in the interest of cost....................M.

Uno Cd is 0.34, turbo is a 0.33 according to what i can find. Coupe is 0.33.

Well there we go then - thanks :)
Coupe would definitely be easier to drive fast, due to the greater weight (less unsprung weight) and larger stance on the road. I agree that putting a twin-cam engine into the Uno would be a waste of time as that would make the weight distribution even worse. I guess, if you have autobahns to drive on, then 160mph in an Uno might make sense. For the rest of us, it would be seriously dodgy!
