Hi,
Now have 3 x1/9s, 85, 88 and 89, lots of work to do, does anyone have any ideas on where I can get a decent manual for the gearbox, I have four boxes, one has a bad 5th, another 3rd and another 4th, I need to make one good box, any ideas welcome,
Tony

I am also looking to get my transmission rebuilt.

So you are saying that Fiat Regata gearbox is a good substitution?

If a Regata is box is a good fit (I have seen a complete 85S engine/gearbox transplanted in an X1/9 before), then what about a Strada box??

Troy.

Yes. I am unsure of the work involved to be honest, as it was done to my Exxy before I owned it, and it is a major improvement over my friends 4spd boxes, if for no other reason than you have an overdrive

The biggest hurdle in converting a 4-spd car to a 5-spd gearbox is the lhs rear swingarm, other than that there isn't much in it at all (you just need to use the later driveshafts and hubs).

The regatta 5-spd box is pretty much identical to the X1/9 box except that the gear linkage comes out the wrong side of the bellhousing.

If you already have a 5-spd box there is pretty much no reason at all to make the swap.

The Strada 5-spd box is the same as well - infact it was the Strada box that was borrowed to put in the X1/9. That said we are talking about the 1500 Strada, not the 2000 115 or 130 - they are different again.

If you just want to put a single good box together you already have most of the parts you could want. The X1/9 box uses solid bushes instead of bearings to support the gears so they won't need replacing although there are bearings in there which should be routinely replaced if you are putting together a "new" box. Other than that it is just a matter of cherry picking all the best components.

Hi,
Thanks for that but I still want a decent manual to cover the gearbox if possible, any ideas????? The haynes manual seems rather vague is it any better in the Ritmo/Strada or Regatta manual? Any other suggestions for good tech info for this box? allideas gratefully received,
Tony

The other haynes manuals are pretty much identical (verbatim) so there isn't much to gain from that approach.

If you can find a proper Fiat workshop manual (seriously long shot) the information is far more complete but even then it still assumes a degree of knowledge that can leave most people feeling a bit lost.

The best thing to do is experiment a bit. If you have 3 boxes you can afford to pull one apart and just see whats in there!

The most highly regarded alternative reference I can think of is here: http://www.network54.com/Forum/1215...d+101"+most+famous+series+on+all+of+Xweb

See if that helps too!

Thanks Jimbro,
Just found a complete Fiat service manual on www.x19gr.50webs.com Seems to be the dogs.....
Between your link and this I hope I can do a decent job,
Will post the progress.
