Tuning 1242cc carb upgrade

Howzit.
Can anybody give me the best advice on a carburator upgrade from a 32/34 webber. For a power increase. A friend of mine put a 36dcd webber on his 1.3 golf and gave him a 8 to 9 kw gain.

I'd have thought a 32/24 (is it a 32/34 DMTL or other DMT* variant?) wd be big already for a 1242 (8v yours is?). My 1301 70SX has 30/32DMTE and I have a 34/34DMTR to go on it, bit worried too big. 34DMTR as used on 127 1300GT, otherwise things like big Citroens. My example is actually intended for a 1756TC Lancia Scorpion (Monte Carlo). A 36DCD wd seem pretty big.
