Technical 115 JTD Economy Drive

...I think this might just be normal for this car, as it shares the aerodynamics of a brick...
That's very unfair to bricks...

Could you have a fuel leak?

Highest MPG figure I've seen on my 139000+ 02 115 is around 62, that's when slipstreaming coaches on motorways.
Cruising at 55-60mph without any 'assistance' from other vehicles gives a constant in the low 50s.
Everywhere else I can keep it to around 45 (all indicated figures).

I did notice a year or so ago, that when towing a small camping trailer on a long motorway run, my fuel consumption improved noticeably, and my rear window stayed totally clear throughout a long, heavy downpour.
The trailer was loaded quite high, improving the aerodynamics no-end.

Hi

BikeDoc, Momoe:

Having connected my OBD scanner to the car, it told me that there were 2 errors, although I cannot remember the correct wording, it was something to the effect of MAF reading outside of range, and also too high. Since resetting these codes, the economy seems a little happier, having completed the same weekly mileage, but with not filling up as soon as normal. I'm not sure what effect this code has had, but it's something that I'll be keeping an eye on.

We got an extra 2 days of driving before filling it up again when the orange empty light came on.

Much happier, and once I've got the strut tops sorted, and the rear swingarm bearing replaced, I will be looking at a tuning box to improve the economy further.

Many thanks to everyone who has provided input and reassurances.

Cheers, Guys.

James

Hi

With the risk of opening old wounds and taking this post off course...

Don't bother with a tuning box. What they do is tell the ECU to dump more fuel in. But they are unable to control the other parameters. The upshot is more power, granted, but quite a strain on your fuel pump components as they constantly run at a higher pressure. Also your clutch will wear even faster with the extra torque, and you DMF will become more strained.

I was considering them on both my diesels until I did quite a bit of research. A remap is a far better option as it's tailored to your car and adjusts everything. Though Clutch & DMF issues are still there. Don't expect a huge return on MPG from either though. In fact you'll probably get less with both of these as more power is a tad addictive.

Keeping your car well serviced (filters, oil, brakes), using good tyres at the correct pressure are all good ways to keep your MPG as the factory intended.

I agree and disagree at same time
Tuning box are cheap but too agressive
Mpg improved by a lot once i stopped playing with the extra power
Yes they do wear clutch and dmf but you wont be blowing clutches and dmfs every 2 months
remap is more effective as is tuned to your engine (when professionaly done)
Some cowboys just increase boost pressure and kill your turbo
And they do dramatically improve mpg my bro
Skoda octavia vrs 1.8t stg 1 remap was doing 50mpg on a run while my mates golf gti with same engine but stage 3 remap was doing 25mpg
It all depends what you want from a remap and how much your budget is
Tight budget a good tuning box is fine otherwise a good remap is better
All engines are slightly detuned by manufacturers but doesnt mean they cant handle more power...
