I have a 1997 Fiat Ducato 1.9TD Campervan. It has a bad waterleak coming from what appears to be underneath the Inlet Maifold Housing. At the moment it won't hold any water, it runs out as fast as I can pour it in. My mechanic wants to find out what parts he needs before he takes it in and ia asking if anyone has had a similar problem or know where I can get an plan of the engine. He doesent have much space and can't really start work on the van until he has parts as he does not have space to hold on to the van for days while waiting to get parts. Any help would be great, thanks

First what is the Engine Series number as this will aid identification. It may be on the chassis plate.:)

Hi tomkc, Looks like you've got quite a problem. Have you got the mechanical skills to dismantle the engine enough for you to find the problem? It may just be a pipe that is split or parted. If you can find it, a repair should be simple. Has your mechanic had a look at it? I presume not as the van will not be drivable as is. Do you have a friend who could help? Where is the van parked? Are you able to work on it where it is? If it's in storage, will they allow you to work on the van? the questions are endless. Knowing what type of engine you've got doesn't really help much. All the Best, Ian.

It's not an engine I have had much to do with.
Is it possible to wipe it clean in that area then get a mobile phone camera to video it with water topped up.
I have been using endoscope cameras to see positions like that recently, it has been a great help on things like heater plugs on Scudo 2.0s with the Peugeot engine tight against the bulkhead.
In an ideal World you would pressure test the cooling system to see better.:)

it's parked in my garden at the moment. It was leaking months ago and my mechanic had a look, but could not see where it was leaking and did not want to take it apart in case he could needed pipes or parts, as he does not have space to park up the van while waiting for parts. This worked great for a few months and then leaked again. Now it will not hold water at all. What I was looking for is a diagram of the engine so that I can get some parts before the mechanic works on it in the hope that it can be sorted there and than. May have to sort another mechanic. Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi again, I have a 1996 1.9td and have owned it for 17 years. You can not get a workshop manual with diagrams as Fiat did not think the public deserved one at that time and have not changed since. A new mechanic sounds a good idea but finding one who can work on a van without a computer these days is as rare as rocking horse s**t. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and have a go yourself. These engines are not as complicated as the modern ones. Even I can do some work on mine and I am no mechanic. Take photos as you go to remind you where everything goes. All the Best, Ian

I have the same engine 1.9 jtd, year 1997. Can someone help me, where is serial number on this engine? I cant find it even with camera.

I have never seen the engine Series number on an engine, usually just a stamped in number telling how many were made before this one.
When I need parts for an engine I usually go by the Chassis/Vin plate as they usually have the Engine Series Number, which is what most technical data manuals ask for. On yours it may be something like this.:- 230A3.000 or maybe 230A4.000.
If you can find that I can let you know Cambelt timing data and things like torque settings and so on.:)

Oh!
Nothing in paperwork from Germany?
Check that engine Series number anyway on Vin plate as that will tell you which engine because some had actual Fiat engines, but some were Peugeot/Citroen, as this may help when trying to find location of actual engine number.
You are looking for something like this, maybe near an engine mounting.

The number is in papers but they want number and picture of serial number on the engine. But we cant get the number, because we dont know where to search. We searched from all sides with endoscope camera, but could not find it.

The places in general I would look at would be near engine mounts, near the top of engine block where it goes towards the gearbox/bell housing and on some vehicles they have a raised boss with the numbers stamped in just below the lip where the cylinder bolts on.
It will not be on the head as that can be changed so has to be on the block.
More to the point did you find what I said about the engine series number on the chassis/vin plate usually riveted on the car, under the bonnet or on some vans on internal door pillars. This will confirm which make of engine as a starting point so that at least we will be looking where that make normally puts the numbers.
For instance this Fiat Bravo engine has a rectangle casting with the number stamped on it to the left of top of flywheel.
