As title, has anyone had this done and, if so, by whom and would you recommend them? I've looked at several and requested a quote for the 'economy' tune from a company called Celtic Tuning, which on paper looks like most other companies' normal re-map (around 19 bhp & 22ft/lb torque). They do also offer a 'Stage 1' tune which claims to offer 130bhp and shedloads more torque but as the idea is for me to get more mpg with maybe a bit more oopmh, for my own- lack of self-restraint I'll stick with the lower spec, as if I get a 68% increase in power I will not be able to resist nailing the throttle every chance I get
Recommendations &/or experience stories welcomed :)

Hi mate,

Not sure where in the country you are, but I had my JTD done by Red Dot. It was a custom map done on a rolling road (the best way).

The JTD is very "under tuned" as standard and even on standard turbo/ internals etc can handle a lot more torque/ power. The weakest link is the clutch. When mine was remapped there were no uprated clutches available for the punto JTD, so I had to be careful about when and how I decided to boot it, but of course if you don't go too mad with the remap it shouldn't really be too much of an issue if your clutch is in good condition. I do believe however that there are now a few uprated clutches available.

Best bet is to make sure everything's functioning correctly before your remap. Eg common points to check on the JTD are the boost solonoid and pipe work, EGR, MAF and the boost pipes, particularly the one from the turbo to intercooler.

Thanks for the reply, I'm on the South Lincs/North Cambs border, in the same village as JabbaSport who tune/develop VAG group products but sadly not Fiats (as far as I know)!
I'll have to try and see if my CD manual wants to work still and find the components you have referred to so I can check they're OK. The boost hose (turbo-to-cooler) alerted me to the fact that I need a replacement turbo as it was dripping oil onto the drive and turned out to be coated both internally and externally in oil. That plus the navy destroyer-like smokescreen on accelleration whi9ch has gradually worsened over time leads me to believe that the oil seals are shot so that's first on the list, together with a new cambelt, check the components you've listed then I'll look at the re-map.
One question; the EGR I understand as it will probably need a de-coke and check to make sure it hasn't seized, boost pipes again obvious, but what am I looking for on the MAF sensor and boost solenoid?

p.s. what level of re-map did you go for (bhp/torque) and what is it like to drive compared to the standard car?
p.p.s. what's the mpg post-re-map?

Hi mate,

With the MAF sensor, the easiest test (without using diagnostics equipment) is to simply unplug the MAF and go for a drive. If the car picks up better and feels more powerful, then you likely need a new MAF sensor.

The booost solonoid is worth looking at if you notice jerky or intermitetnt boost. Normally just requires cleaning. You will find it when your checking the boost pipes (including the small vac and boost pipes)

With mine, I started off at around 120bhp. It was a great improvement. Eventually I ended up at around 140bhp and iirc around 235 ft-lb torque. However as I say, my standard clutch didnt like that much.

My mpg was a constant 45mpg for my daily commute and I could get it to around 55mpg if I drove sensibly.

Many years ago I had a remap by Red Dot on my then new 02 plate Eleganza - had about 250 lb/ft torque and 150bhp. Utterly mad and downright lethal in the wet. Ate clutches for breakfast. Bloody good fun though.

These it'd engines are seriously detuned as standard, if I still had our hgt multijet that would have had a remap by now 100bhp standard so 120-140bhp would have been a nice improvement and they have an uprated clutch and gearbox compared to the normal 1.9 jtd.....

Hell might have to just buy another 1.9multijet
