hi
any one know how much a recon 1.8 engine for a HLX would cost, and where can I get one from... and do these people fit them as well ? and the fitting cost.

many thanks..

I've got one in mine after the cambelt went.

Recon engine had 7k miles on it when it was transplanted. Fortunately for me but unfortunately for you the previous owner did this. I think the costs of everything involved came to close to £1000 but specifically what the figure was I don't know.

Soz I can't be more helpful!

recon engine

Hi insomnia

yes I'm still up!!

my engine is still running okay , but sounds like a diesel! the dealer I bought it from says it could be the cam to cam belt settings they use when they replace the cam belt...which he did 2 weeks ago. He just replaced it instead of checking the settings the previous garage set it to. So I'm taking it back for him to sort it, I hope!
last resort is the recon engine option. Love the car so have to get it sorted!! pray for me!!

Re: recon engine

My 1.8 is a bit noisy too, the noise is a slight dieselly sound coming from the cambelt end of the engine. I intend to drop it into a garage soon, problem is finding a garage that isn't booked up for weeks :( According to the blurb with the car, the cambelt was done in April so not that long ago, just I am panicking now and wondering if they replaced the tensioner and if not, is that where the noise is coming from :(

Do the 1.8's tend to be noisy? I knew someone with a 1.8 Alfa that was noisy, turned out to be a knackered cam variator but to the best of my knowledge the Fiat's don't have variable valve timing do they?

Re: recon engine

1.8 noisey? I'd say no.

Judging from mine its very very quiet. Obviously gets louder when I boot it (and induction kit don't help for loudness!) but on the whole, its a very quiet and rattle/shake/dieselly-free sounding car.

Prolly not what either of you two wanna hear. Soz :(

Noise!

My 1.8 HLX suffers from the similar noiseyness, which is only really apparent when the engine's running with the bonnet up.

I just assume that this is the engine showing its age...

Re: Noise!

When I first bought my 1.8 HLX it was noisy and tappety. It eventually developed a bad oil leak for the crank oil seal. When the garage attempted a repair on this a got the oil to the correct level, the engine sounded soo much smoother. Shame this fix didn't last and in the end I had to replace the engine as the seal kept being pushed out.

Got an engine from a 98' S reg with 46,000 miles on it for me was £400 ish.

The transplant ran to about £300 in the end after a couple of minor probs!

Re: recon engine

Did you ever get your 1.8 sorted and if not and it is still noisy, does it still work?
