hi all has anyone had there stilo(1.6 dynamic) stall then a car security faliure loose connection warning comes on happened on motorway called aa and it then started first time he ran a diagnostic which showed no errors, happened again about 40 miles on, started after leaving it 10 mins then on way back it did it again but this time it would not start ,same message been in fiat garage for a week and a half so far had a new battery paid for 2 hours labour at 145 quid (they tell me they have spent at least 7 hours on it ) and it still does not start cheers aid

New battery? Why?
Almost definitely sounds like the D4 connector. Look in the Stilo Guides as to where it is and what to do with it.
If so it should have taken no more than 30mins to diagnose
"Loose connection" is a big clue
Been through some deep puddles lately? Yeah who hasn't:)

did have a look at the d4 connector and it seemed ok said the battery was shot cost me 97 quid for the battery too !!

What does "did have a look" actually mean?

I'd back probe the D4 connector and make sure the pins were making 100% proper contact. It's the only way to be absolutely certain

I'd also check out the electrical contact on the key code pick up aerial on the ignition switch

well i took it apart and reconnected it looked pretty clean saw the fiat tech having a look too he also took the clocks out of the dash the engine turns but does not fire
he told me that the computer is not telling them the fault codes when running the diagnostic he said it might be the engine management thought they might have been able to check that first though what do u reckon(y)

Well, like i said, i'd back probe the D4 as it only takes one pin to not connect
Yes if there's a security failure then there will be no fuel and no ignition so it will turn but not fire
Just a thought, they have pushed in the fuel/ignition shut off valve reset button haven't they??

Otherwise, definitely an engine management problem of course, but that doesn't help you very much and if your guys can't get any fault codes then i would imagine some changing of expensive bits coming up

My Stilo had a rough time the 1st of January this year. A bit late y2k problem. The engine turned, but did not fire at all. Turned out to be two things. Worn out battery AND a corroded crank shaft sensor - due to salty winter roads. No fault code stored at all. New Hella battery and brushed/cleaned sensor, and she was fine again.

thanks for your help guys ill give the garage a ring tommorrow and see whats going on ill mention the shut off valve too

Car Security Failure means that the "handshaking" process between the ECU and CODE Immobiliser computer, managed by the Body Computer, has not completed successfully. There could be many causes, for example
  • Battery Problems - low battery could cause incorrect voltages and bad messages.
  • Poor Contact on CODE Antenna - as shown by Deckchair's picture in post 5, if the connector for this ring is loose, or if the ring isn't sat down properly, error messages could occur.
  • D4 - most likely cause, since Engine ECU wiring passes through here.
  • Faulty Key - dropped the key recently? Any damage to the chip inside the key could bring up errors.

I have no idea what your FIAT tech was doing with the instrument cluster - the car will start fine and run without the clocks installed.

I had this issue a few times on my Stilo - once I had D4 repaired (I drove through a puddle which caused it to bring up an "Engine Fault" message, the dealer repaired the wiring and all my error messages disappeared), the "Car Security Failure" message never reappeared.

I had security message up the other day for the first and only time ..my key blip wouldn't open the door but it would start the car ..I thought it was the battery as I have had the car 2 years now but what you have said just came together about the key being damaged and a security warning coming up because of it ..luckily I have a spare key that has the remote locking on it so all not lost ..:bang: and yes I am always dropping my keys

Ah see, I know my stuff :p.

FYI, battery inside key won't affect immobiliser - the clip isn't powered by it, only the remote for the locking.
