Hands up every one with a 1.6 engine thats noisy on start up.

Mines in the shop at the moment, they've change the cam belt tensioners and belts, but the noise didn't go, now they've flushed the engine oil, but seem a bit reluctant to give the car back to me a present, they've had it over a week, any thoughts. :(

Yes its a noisy tractor first thing in the morning for about 10 seconds... worse than an old diesel... My 1.6 Stilo is like this, just like my 1.6 Bravo was, then after 10 secs its quiet and refined.

There have been posts on here about this before and techies have commented it being the type of engine, others saying yes it just does that, to tappets filling with oil when you turn the key...

Either way it has not been a problem in my 3 years of Fiat 1.6 engine ownership and has not seemed to cause any problems with the car.

DD do you get the tappet rattle noise or is it another noise? I find with mine I get a whine like a supercharger for about the first mile on startup in the morning and again in the evening after work when the car has been standing all day. It sounds quite neat but I am getting concerned that it could be something nasty. I think a trip to the dealer is on the books. I have 7600 miles on the clock now.

Thanks for the replys guys.

I'm trying not to panic but got a friend, who had the same rattle on start up an ended up having a new engine because some muppet at the factory bored the cylinders oversize causing the pistons to slap and totally knackered the engine.
Mine is excactly the same age April 02 and is comming up to the same milage 30k , do you reccon these screw ups occure in batches?
and i've only 6 weeks of the warranty left :(

I'll keep you posted.

Yellow 1.6 dynamic - fully kitted - 17" five spokes.

Mine is an......................................

03 model, and I've always used Optimax, it has 15,000 miles on the clock and the engine is just starting to loosen up, I've noticed improved performance of late, it definitely feels faster, but , and this is an ongoing but, it doesn't return more than 25mpg!

32k on the Stilo here, I noticed the sound yesterday. Sounded just like my old rover did at startup and that was at 74k.
I'll assume the 1.6 is a hydraulic tappet based engine(which the Rover's was)? If it is i'd expect thats where the noise came from.

If your worried about the warranty situation after the 3 years, have a look at http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk

Scorg are they any good? I'm planning on getting something like this in a couple of years as I'm hoping to keep two Stilos, when I get the other one in a couple of months for about 8 years each! Is the linkled one the best co around?

Basically I'd want one that covers everything, I presume all I have to do is ensure I have regular servicing?

They are highly rated and when you do a quote you can get a list up of everything thats covered.
Ive not had to use them as of yet, but may have to use them on the brava soon on a couple of things.

Dastardly Dick aka Mr Chris

Chris it's Ash but you probably guessed that already.

Sorry Chris it's going to be bad news on your engine....just like mine.

Guess what, the Stilo's packed up again!

I had the air con checked by a non Fiat bloke yesterday (someone who know's his onions) and apparantly there's no refridgerant in my system. After pressure testing it there's a huge leak in the system. When Fiat replaced the engine they must have damaged the tubing and didn't even check it, T*****S!

Both my airbag lights are going off and on better than the family Shepherd's Christmas decorations, but not as festive.

Taking it back to a different dealer this week, someone with a courtesy car available

Ash

Hydraulic tappet noise shouldn't take minutes to quieten! Should be a couple of seconds at worst! My ole MKIII Escort had hydraulic tappets and it quetened down within a few seconds of startup!

Yeah it does quiet out within seconds here.
but ive got to say, an Escort that quiet ups? does such an Escort exist? :D

Thanks Scorg

I had a look and it looks good, about half the price of the 4th year warranty that FIAT are trying to push on me, also covers more, wear and tare parts which fail included which FIAT Don't. (Have you noticed that all parts according to FIAT are wear and tare?)

Worth it for the peace of mind i think.

Cheers - good one. (y)

Hey Guess What,?

I get my car back today, apparently they've done a couple of good engine flushes and have started the car morning and evening for the last five days with no noises.
So all seems well and i did get the cam belts and tensioners replaced under warranty because they were found to be faulty.(JCS top class service Dept) (y)
now to see if the noise comes back, I have instruction to go back straight away if it does. Can't grumble at that. :)

It sure did, 165,000 miles on the same engine, only had its head gasket done at 95,000 miles. Still on its original 4-speed gear box, although clutch was replaced at 110,000 miles.

I loved the car, only scrapped it due to flappy front wings! Sat in a lockup for 12 months and the day it went to the scrappied it started perfectly with a jump start off my mini! Same old fuel..... poor old thing dragged itself out of the lockup with its backwheels locked up! Free'd off eventually, and drove off to the scrappies...... my dad was flying off in it.... commented afterwards that it still drove like a dream!
