hello,

had a customer come in with a 2008 1.4 16v sporting.

it has broken the mounting point off the gearbox and ripped the flexi pipe, they took it to there dealer who just told them it will cost them about £2500 to fix it.

so they took it away, now being a 2008, surely it has warranty? i do not know if its been serviced yet, it has 22,000 miles on it.

anyone know if its covered under warranty even if its not been serviced (bare in mind im not saying it hasnt, but i cant get hold of the customer to find out atm)

has anyone seen this before?

hope someone can help - cheers! :D(y)

well hopefully a someone who works at a fiat dealer can confirm, cos i think it should deffo be covered too, but dealer wasnt helpful and just told them its going to be about £2500!

i mean if it was in its 3rd year warranty i could understand it might be a bit hit and miss, but its a 2008 model, so its under 2 yrs old.

The customer needs to phone Fiat UK on 00800 3428 0000 and tell them what's gone on & get confirmation it'll be done under warranty. It should be done unless the car has obviously been mis-treated, in which case i can understand why it wouldnt.

If the car has been looked after & Fiat UK refuse they need to get in touch with Fiat in Italy as they usually seem abit more responsive. Mind you, they shouldn't need to go that far - Not if Fiat really are as committed to improving their customer service as they say they are.

well we have had a good look and theres no damage to the engine/box from hitting anything and that bar appears to have equal bends in it either side which look original and its not pushed up, and the lip on the bar is straight not bent.

his not a boy racer no lol

£2500!!! EEEEK!

Thats the kind of thing that happens to me! I had a Rover 214 Convertible a few years back in its 3rd year of warranty. I was approaching a roundabout, and as I put my foot on the clutch the car stopped dead with a bang. Turned out the clutch plate had snapped in half! Rover replaced it and various other bits that were ruined immediately without question. I can just see the look on the dealers face if I took a Fiat in it's 3rd year of warranty into them with the same problem...

It's this kind of "must be due to abuse" attitude that Fiat have over warranty claims that puts me off buying another car from them.(n)

Have a good look at the metal where the break is and around the area. Is there any evidence of a casting fault nearby? grooves in the surface where it looks like metal hasn't flowed together properly before solidifying, pin holes or somthing like that. Then look at the fracture surface itself. If some of it is dirty, that would suggest a crack that has been developing for some time, if it is all clean then it probably happened quickly, like if it had been whacked against somthing.

Actually, looking at the full size pic, it looks like there was a developing fault from the inside of the bolt hole bore, (kind of smooth and a bit wavy) manufacturing fault that has finally let go where the rough looking surface is.

I'd be wanting an independant report from an engineer. Get in touch with the C.A.B, there's a legal requirement that goods for sale have to be fit for purpose, if this has failed within warrantee, it's clearly not.
