I think my car may be broken

Over the last 300 miles (since buying the car last Friday) I have achieved an average of 38mpg. This is both through the onboard computer and my maths after filling up.

Is this entirely normal? My driving isn't that enthusiastic and I've only given it the beans a few times. My commute to work is literally 16 miles of 6th gear 70mph on the motorway. I thought I'd be getting mid to high 40's at least.

I just wondered what other people get?

The car when sitting at 70-80mph does seem to accelerate and deccelerate on its own ever so slightly, which could be a nackered lambda sensor overfueling, which would highlight shocking mpg. Baring in mind Parkers book figure is 47mpg combined, I thought I would achieve 40's at least!

Any information on it would be great?! I'm not too worried about the actual mpg money side of things, more that it might be over fuelling or something!

At the mo my 16v is only getting about that and for quite a while now its been sticking at certain speed, I see the egr being mentioned for almost anything for m-jets, wondering if that could be affecting mine, Best Mpg i've had in a over year is 41, normally, and like you its mostly 15+ miles at 60-70

Don’t know the source of the theory, but it’s argued that 10% off the combined figure is a reasonable result – so that takes you to (say) 42mpg, & then only `missing’ 4mpg.

The `problem’ may be … taking-off for work (a) from cold with (b) full-afterburners (c) upto 70mph. Try sub 40mph until the temp gauge needle is vertical (normal) – but 70+mph will knock your mpg back by 20-25%.

Leave your flight recorder set to <instant mpg> & frighten yourself!

Well what I get depends on the type of driving I do. Obviously if its mostly town driving then its lower and I would get around the high 30s. If its mostly motorway driving then I usually get mid to high 40s. However my usual average is in the low 40s as I do a mixture of motorway and town driving.

You don't have an EGR unless its diesel ;)

Ok, so is wiki wrong then?

Its wrong, EPER only lists the diesel engines with EGR valves.

Never believe all you read on Wikipedia ;)

Thanks adam i know not to believe erverything, not really meddled with an engine before so don't know whats what for the most part (know the basics tho, battery, oil, fuses, water coolant etc i'm not totally hopeless ;)) now i have to find some other reason for flatspots :(

I have 1.4 16v and have a 12 mile commute to work i only get about 38 mpg as well, although i did get 47 on a 1000 mile round trip Newcastle to Cornwall last year.

Well it seems the idiotic Mazda garage that I bought it from put 5w30 in it, not 5w40, not sure if this will make a difference. Anyway I kicked up a fuss and they've changed it.

I have read on here however that the 1.4 16v engine likes to be read, and keeping it down low can have a bad affect on MPG. I've done a few anal tests and it seems to be right. Going through a village at 30mph in 4th gets worse MPG than 30mph in 3rd. Weird huh?! I'm not putting into 6th on countryroads now, instead only using that for the motorway. Will see how quickly this next tank disappears I suppose.

I generally use my T-Jet round the town, and I do put my foot down every now again, because otherwise what's the point in a T-Jet and I get about 30mpg on Unleaded and about 32mpg on Super Unleaded.

But the instant shows up to 60-70 when cruising in 5th...
