Hi people

Just wondering if anyone has driven a 1.3 diesel punto ???

Im looking round for a cheap to run ...lots of MPG, 35 pound a year road tax, and so on.

been looking at meganes and peugeot but then I came across ther puntos last night on autotrader and realised they are in the cheap tax bracket too ....

so was just wondering if anyone had any input on the 1.3 diesels ??

cheers jimbo

well the 1.3JTD won the award for the best diesel engine under 1.4... beating the 1.4 3cylinder VW PD engine....

Personally I Love Kates 1.4TDI Polo... so I'd say get a polo over a fiat.... but they do cost alot more... about £5k for a 53 plate.

The Swift has the same 1.3JTD engine as the punto.... or you could get a Panda or a 500 :)

Hi Jimbo,

I've had a drive in one and was impressed with the overall package. I test drove the 1.3 dynamic with 15 inch alloy wheels and aircon as standard.

In fact I liked it so much I recommended it to a friend who does a lot of motorway driving and we worked out it would half his car running costs. He picked it up last thursday.

I didn't buy one in the end, and thats because although I wanted to improve my economy and be kinder to the environment, it was just too much of a step down from the HGT. I test drove the 1.9 diesel sporting afterwards which was more my kind of car, but not as smooth as the HGT.

The 1.3 is great and actually surprisingly nippy in anything but 1st gear which seems a bit pointless as you get about half a second in it before needing to change.

I think some of the issues with it were just down to my driving style and only getting 15 minutes with it. Having never driven a diesel I needed time to change from a normally aspirated petrol that likes to be revved to a turbo diesel.

Anyway, after rambling and in conclusion. I'd get down to your local FIAT garage and talk them in to a 24/48 hour test drive (mine would do that but I had to push a bit). The 1.3 is a great car and as it's more entry level it will hold its value much better than the bigger engines in the range.

Hope that helps a bit.

cheers for the replies the pair of you

really helpful advice..sounds like it would be ok

I just didnt want to end up with some gutless wonder thing pootling along at 40 everywhere

Wasnt expecting miracles but kinda nice to think your driving something comfortable eh ...lol

Im only looking to spend about 3 to 3.5 grand cos I need to just spend what I can get for my 7 seater people carrier and thats only worth around the 3.5 grand mark, so the concept of test driving one for 48 hours prob not a runner eh ???

I have seen a few around on autotrader for that sort of money but just wanted your lots opinion before travelling 70 odd miles to look at one and find them horrible or something

I'd still go for the test drive :) I didn't buy in the end, but was polite and took all the info/prices/options they wanted to feed me. I didn't feel too guilty as I was genuinely considering buying one from them, but the end result was the same as yours would be, no sale.

Tommy

With all due respect mate if I had 325 quid to throw at getting the car retuned I wouldnt be buying a tiny engined car that only costs 35 quid a year to tax ....lol

I aint doing it for the environment mate im doing it cos I cant afford not to

Im using my people carrier every day for work and even though it does 40 + to the gallon its still costing me 190 quid to tax for the year and when you consider I work 19 miles from home its costing me 6 quid just to get to work and back every day.

Hence needing a little runaround for in the week and me and the missus will just have to take the tribe out in two cars over the weekends ...lol

By the way the tribe consists of

Me
My Missus
our son
her two daughters
and one grandaughter

Hence me being skint all the time :(

p.s. anyone need a seven seater ???

well if your only goign to do 12miles a day... why you going to spunk £3k on a car your gonna be sat in for 30mins a day.

Go find yourself a.........
