I’ve been attempting to undo the nut but it’s proving impossible. Engine is on stand & I’ve already broken some tools using so much force. Haynes manual says left hand thread but can anyone confirm this is correct please?

That's what I've heard too.. not just the MJ but a lot/most engines... but I've never had to undo one, so I don't know for sure.

What are you trying to do though? There may be another way round it that doesn't involve undoing the crank nut. At least the beast is out of the car... to make it a bit easier..

I just checked my Haynes manual -Haynes 5558 Fiat 500 and Panda - where it shows under the "Torque Wrench Settings":

Crankshaft pulley hub to crankshaft:
Stage 1 50Nm (37lbf ft)
Stage 2 Angle tighten a further 90 degrees.
There are two "advisements"
* Use a new fastener - So I presume the bolt may be a stretch bolt and if so it must be fully tightened only once.
* Left Hand thread.

Hope that helps.

Thanks I will have another go today once I’ve bought a 1/2 socket for it.

The crank needs to be reground or replaced

The whole engine is scrap really by looks of it really not worth spending big money on these when you could get a second hand running engine and put a new chain on it
The engine parts aren’t that expensive. A second hand engine is about a grand & who’s to say that will be ok. To be honest the car is only good for scrap at this point but I’ve never completely stripped down and rebuilt a Diesel engine so it’s more of a learning experience now.

My mains powered one that I only pull out in emergencies didn't touch it
Do you have a "friendly" workshop anywhere near? most garages will have a powerful airgun which will probably manage this and may oblige if you can get the engine/short block round to them.

I've not rebuilt a Fiat diesel but I've been involved in a couple of VAG units and, compared to a petrol, there are different things to be aware of - like, for instance, often several different thicknesses of head gasket are available which will relate to piston crown to deck height (how far down the bore the pistons are at TDC).

I know what you mean about second hand engines. I would tend to only go that route if I were selling the vehicles shortly after fitting.

1/2" drive are you talking about? Half inch drive single hex socket, "T" bar (or power bar) and a nice big length of scaffold pole. Then all you've got to think about is how to hold the engine down to stop it rotating? At a pinch I've stuck it under a car and let it down on top of it!

Yeah still no good, I’ve ordered a proper impact socket so will tackle it tomorrow with 5 minutes of map gas on it followed by impact gun then worse case angle grinder!

What did you do without the 1/2" impact socket? Any impact gun I've seen has at least a 1/2" drive.

A second hand engine as common as the 1.3 is nowhere near that price

The experience is allways good but by the time you got. Anew turbo timing chain kit crank replaced or reground and bearing's new head gasket and bolts water pump and whatever else you may find it will soon run into bigs costs and you can get running engine's for less then £1k it's a fairly common engine even if you use use the base block and swap some parts ovee

Step down adapter to 3/8 which isn't ideal but all I had. I've treated myself to a new impact gun as well double the force of my current one so hopefully good to go tomorrow.

I'm just going off prices on ebay I saw. It's the 95hp version (not sure if engine components are different though).

It’s off! 2-3 minutes of map gas and my new impact cracked it but not easily!

It did however knock this small part out from somewhere on the engine & I have no clue where from, can anyone help identify it?
