I have a problem with a fiat 500 2008 1.3 multi jet diesel . I have put a new used engine in and it runs perfect, it fly's. but every now and then I get clouds of smoke out of the exhaust, It looks blue to me, but difficult to tell, It has now done it several times, usually if i stop and leave it a few minutes it starts up fine no smoke. and I drove it over an hour the other day without any problems, I drove it last Sunday up the motor way for about 10 miles about 3 miles on country roads and then it started to smoke again. I was going fishing, so after fishing about 3 hours later, I drove it 15 miles home and no smoke whatsoever. I did the same trip yesterday perfect all the way there but then on the way back it started to smoke again, so I stopped turned off the ignition took the key out, put it back in started perfect and then drove home with no smoke. It has a new DPF filter on it, Any idea's , as I am a little confused here.

How is your oil level? If the oil level has moved up the dipstick a little It could be trying to complete a regen?

Do you have Multi ecu scan? If you do, try resetting the dpf counter.

Hi Thanks for that, Yes I have multiscan, I will do it later today and I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks

Thanks, but I am pretty sure it is not head gasket, what ever it is doing it is controlled electrically, ecu probably.

Hi,
I'm having a similar problem with my 58 plate diesel. Does it when the engine just about reaches running temp.
Did you find an answer to the issue?

Thanks, Dave B

With..or without.. a DPF?

That would rule out a fair few things ;)

Not sure if paullap got to the bottom of it..

What is the history of yours Dave?
Been creeping in..or started suddenly??

Hi,
It has a DPF, but there are no warning lights on the dashboard. Started about a year ago, probably once a month, now a couple of times a week.

Done 88,000 miles. Feels a bit down on power for about a week now.

Could turbo be an issue?

Hi, I have re set the regeneration counter I think it was and was great for about a month, then it did it again, you cant see anything behind , it is that bad. Just drove it this morning for about 20 miles and was perfect, loads of power no smoke, I am going to get multiscan back on it and see what shows, not really sure what to look for. I haven't had a lot of time to play with it, I will come back and let you know what I find.

Hi Paul ,
Did you get to the bottom of this as my 1.3 Qubo does the same thing .. I’ve be chasing it for some time but can’t seem to find any answers it’s definitely when the car does a regen about every 300miles or so and if you stop and restart the car it clears again until the regen starts again ..
if I do a service regen form my scan tool it also does it ..

Hi Paul,
Did you ever sort the problem? I had very similar symptoms - same model 500 also. Eventually had an engine light pointing to the MAP sensor. Changed the sensor and it's not happened since.
