Hi Guys!!
Thinking of purchasing a 1.3 diesel Grande punto. Want to know what the fuel consumption is like. Its at 07 plate. Info on dealer website tells me 45 urgan 62 combined and 80 extra urban (whatever that is!).

Any advice please? It seems a good price and low tax and insurance so I'm hoping for some positive answers.

Here's hoping!

i run a mk2b with this engine and i find it superb in all respects
bits are dear at dealers for it mind
and remember in the grande bodyshell its a bigger lump of metal to hog round
if i was you i would go for a good drive in it on the kind of route you would normally take because you might find you are always hunting for a gear if not on open roads
make sure clutch smooth too with no nasty noisies at start up turn off or when you let the pedal up because it will be a big bill noise if there is one and seller will obviously want to wriggle out of a warranty claim under fair wear and term usage

I'm a driving instructor and I get about 50miles to the gallon, bear in mind my average speed is about 14mph. I'm sure you would get a lot more if on a longer run.

I have this model, but the 2008 version. I drive to work everyday 10 mile round trips even on a short run and fill up every 3/4 weeks. I don't know about the mpg being true. I drove it from London to Blackpool and back for about £80ish.

Before it I had a 2004 1.3 Corsa. You do really notice the difference in consumption. All of these cars post 2005 have a particulate that allows tax to be £30 a year so great in the long run. Only thing is obviously the car lags in speed: You can be on the motorway and put your pedal flat in 5th and it takes it's time.

I recommend the 90hp 6 speed 1.3. If you get one that's £105 tax, you can be sure it has no particulate filter. Once you get used to where the power is, it's a fantastic little engine that has no trouble lugging the weight of the Grande Punto about, and on A-roads it is not unusual to see MPG approaching 70.

An important note, make sure that you get one with a full service history and/or can be sure it has had regular oil changes, they're vital for the life of these engines.

I think you will find @Cadabena that its the 75HP variant which doesn't have the DPF (DieselParticulateFilter) and DMF (DualMassFlywheel). These based on my understanding were "options" on the 75HP cars and then became "standard Equipment" on the 90HP cars.
@Slip66 I have a 5 door 07 1.3Mjet 75HP. I use it to get to work and back (2 miles each way) and the shopping trips, etc. Depending on how aggressive you are with acceleration or your top speed on a motorway, its possible to get 40~50MPG combined average. I'm currently managing 48MPG average on my tank, but my last tank was mostly to work and back and that was 42MPG. My car doesn't really get warm enough on the work trips which will not help consumption, but overall although I can hit 70+MPG on a flat road at 60MPH, I think 70MPG as an "average" is optimistic unless you accelerate without using the Turbo at all (shifting all gears between 1~2000rpm), and that's just not safe and takes way too long.

On the motorway 5th Gear at 60MPH is around 2200rpm, at 70MPH its closer to 3000rpm. If you were to keep to a constant 70MPH @3000rpm, then your average consumption will be in the low 40's in my opinion. The car is happiest and most fuel efficient at 60MPH. My opinion is that the car is geared towards town transport with the 5 speed gearbox. Can't comment on the 6 speed gearbox version.

Neither version is going to win you any races, but the 75HP version is simpler with less expensive parts to go wrong and not that much slower than the 90HP version. The 90HP version is arguably more refined and the 6 speed box may offer an advantage on A/M roads, but you need to drive it yourself and see.

Overall though cheap and cheerful motors that feel much better put together than the previous Punto's. I'm managing 1 tank fill up per month, which is less than half of what I used to pay for fuel per month using my other car ;)

Good Luck.

DPF is definitely only an option for the 90hp, I can safely say mine doesn't have one. The only reason to have it is it puts your CO2 down from 122g to 119g. But, for the extra £75 tax a year, it's nice knowing there's no restraining DPF under the bonnet :p

I stand corrected. I was supposedly reliably informed that all 90HP cars had the multi-geometry turbo, DMF and DPF as standard. It's also the reason why I went with the 75HP variant, as its simpler and cheaper to maintain with those components not included. Ahh well.... :)
