Hi there.

i'm going to look at a 1.2 16v HLX, with aircon actually later today. Currently have an 8v.

But i'm a bit worried about the mileage the car has done, it currently sits at 133k miles. And just wondering how much more life there's left in this little engine, since i'm going to use it for commuting to and from work 56 miles a day. And don't wan't to run in to any major problems, like rebuilding the engine. Clutch i'm aware of, may need changing at this mileage, i'll hear the seller about that. Car looks pretty well taken care of, and has only had one previous owner, which seller says have taken good care of the car. Has had the undercarriage sealed. And earlier MOT report's, doesn't show signs of it being a problem earlier on. I'll still have a look underneath though ;)

Let me now what you think! (y)

Regards Frederik

I have a Finnish 2004/2005 Punto 1.2 16V Dynamic with 138,000 miles (222,300km)

Mine has also had the car sealed underneath. More or less no rust at all.

Original clutch, brakes and suspension apart from one wheel bearing, a nut and bolt, and the front brake pads. :)

The car has been in the family since new.

Seems to be running better than ever. No oil leaks anywhere.

Takes an amazing amount of stuff with the back seats folded down.

This is something that really irritates me - people assuming that anything over 100,000 miles means the car is a gonner.

My Punto (1.2 8v) has 136,000 miles and runs like new, and our 2005 Nissan Primera 1.8 has 203,000 miles and also runs like new. It is an ex-taxi and only had an oil change once a year (going over 20k between changes).

Whereas, we have owned cars in the past that have had 70,000 miles and they ended up scrapped as they were beyond repair.

As long as it comes from a good owner, has no existing issues and has been serviced regularly throughout its life, there is no reason it couldn't exceed 200,000 miles. The main thing is the maintenance YOU provide from the day you take over ownership. Basically, get the oil changed every 5,000 miles/6 months and you can't go wrong.

My Brava 1.2 16V has a total of 156,000 miles.. the engine was changed (abused by 1st owners and a bad garage) at 106,000 with a 33,000 mile engine so that engine has done 83,000 miles without problems and runs great. These engines don't hold a lot of oil so it's important that this is changed regularly, and the head gaskets can fail if the coolant hasn't been changed properly also, but otherwise these are tough little italian engines and in a Punto it should not have been worked very hard.

The car is only 10 years old so unless it was used as a Taxi the miles it had covered will probably have been long cruising journeys... the best type for an engine to do.
