Hi

Hope some one can help me
Fiat Fiorino van 1.3 mutijet diesel 2008/9

Have managed to lose details of wiring to starter motor
I have 3 wires

1 goes to the Alternater
1 goes to the battery

i assume (could easily be wrong) last wire goes to the ignition switch or ECU.
BUT ! where do they fit on the solenoid i include pictures of starter motor.

Re: Wiring to starter motor problem

Thanks for the reply charlie
Haven't done it yet been without a van for over a week now.
Gotta take wife to hospital appointment on Monday

Starter Motor bench tests up ok ,Battery Fine .
So its just wiring to it that's wrong

So description is

2 Terminals with a nut on

1 terminal takes braided wire back to body of motor
from what i read nothing else should be attached here.
Other terminal takes all three wires

Ignition or control wire

Alternator wire and

Battery wire

Most Starter Motors have three terminals

1 Terminal for braided wire back to body of motor

1 for battery wire and alternator

1 for ignition wire

Having only 2 terminals on the fiat starter i have discovered via testing that the base of the terminal that takes the 3 wires has an S or ignition wire terminal soldered at its base.

I therefore surmise that the ignition wire ( that has a large diameter ring connector) gets isolated at the base and the other 2 wires go over the top of the terminal .

I will be trying this later today.

I am not very good at explaining stuff so i will post another photo with wires on should this work out.

If any further advice available it would be appreciated

Big Thanks gromit.

Hi,
You are basically correct.

The starter on connection has an oversize lug on thinner cable that goes over the insulator and makes contact with the metal ring at it's base. There should be an insulating collar that goes on top to keep it in contact. Then the two large cables with smaller holes in the lugs go on the threaded stud with a nut on top.

If the insulating collar is missing a short length of fuel hose can make a subsitute.

All info spot on.

However as i started connecting, i found the plastic bit that i thought was missing.
It was in fact attached to the battery wire and had slid along.

It was the plastic terminal cover that had the shape molded into it that held down the wide terminal ring onto the base of the terminal.

This in turn has the the battery and alternator ring terminals screwed over it and therefore holds the base terminal in place.

I have made sure to post, not only to thank you but also to leave the info for anyone else who has a similar problem.

With no repair manuals available for the Fiorini this place is like gold.

Now Crank shaft oil seal is next.
