My Boot light doesnt come on when i open the boot.

Any ideas whats causing this.

I have changed the bulb and no difference and its not the boot sensor as this show up on the car display inside when i open the boot.

Any ideas would be great.

I think it would be a perminant feed. Where is the sensor located that knows if the boot is open?

Although that seems so tell me the boot is open on my display inside, so i dont think thats at fault.

Mine comes on whenever i open the boot, keys in ignition or not.
By the way activematt, you talked about the ash tray; when did the stop puting ash trays into Stilo's or is it just the ones with climate control that havn't got it. Mines got the trap door where it should be but it doesn't open.

Hmm dont know, mine hasnt got climate control and its 2002 so..... wasnt aware they'd got rid of the ash tray on any of the models at any time

Sounds like you've got a nice feature there Stilo Multijet (y)

Smoking :yuck: is completely banned in my JTD so the ash tray is a complete waste of space!

I find its good for putting coins in

Ditto very handy for coins now my boot light is on whenever I lift the boot day or night my problem is the remote senser/motor which ever it is is missing got to open with key priced the part £25

So where is the boot sensor located on the stilo, is in build in to the lock mechanism on the boot lid?

Ok to bring this thread back to my initial question.

Where is the sensor that know when the the boot is open?

I have had a look at the wiring for my boot light and it seems to go through a diode. Does any one know what this diode does?

Go for the easy stuff first
You have changed the bulb but have you checked for power at the light?
Is the fuse OK?
Is there power at the electrical connection to the light assembly?
Is the earth connection good at the light?

Have you ever seen it working? I believe the boot light and the boot cigar lighter were "extras" and may not ever have been connected properly

The boot lid switch is usually a proximity sensor so it'll either be on the door or at the door catch itself.

I have checked the bulb and that is ok.
There doesnt seem to be power to the connection
The boot cigar power supply seems to work fine.

Not sure about what fuse it is or about the earthing of it

Does anyone no what fuse it uses and where its located.

Pull the light assembly out and check for power coming in to the light and se that the other contact has a good earth connection, it could be a simple poor contact from the wires to the light assembly

To get to the boot sensor you'll probably have to remove the plastic panel over the rear door catch held with 3 screws

I have used a multimeter on it and there doesnt seem to be any power.

There seems to be a small about of power before the diode that is on the wire that goes to the light bulb though, but the wires disapear into a big wireing loom so not sure where they go after that.

Damn. I would have thought there should be power on it and that the boot proximity sensor takes it to earth when the boot is open. Are you actually checking the wire to the light for power or just the light contact?

There should be permanently 12v to the light assembly. If there isn't then the problems up stream of that ie fuses, wiring, connectors. I would have thought it was on the same fuse as the other interior lights but that's just a guess

Next, I'd whip that plastic panel off over the boot catch, find the boot sensor switch and see what's going on there.
Check for connection between the light earth output to the switch?
Is the switch working?
Does the other side of the switch have good contact to earth?
But if you haven't got power even going to the light then checking the switch and wiring is pointless as it's on the output side of the circuit. Just need to be absolutely sure you have no power coming in to the switch.

Ah! Are you just putting the multimeter across the two light contacts? If so then that's no good as a bad earth won't show up. You need to check between one of the contacts and a good earth point for power. Make a note of which side has the power then, with bulb removed, check the other side for near zero resistance with earth

(Sorry if this insults your intelligence but it's amazing the "checks" people make that don't check things at all)

No idea what the diode is for, just probably a safety device

Yeah thanks for your help.

The sensor on the boot lid must work I think as is displays the boot is open on the info screen on the dashboard.

You're probably right but they often take two lines off of sensors, one for each module they operate

Go on the look for lost power at the light assembly and upstream of that

Should be 12v there 24/7. If there's no power there then you can dismiss problems with the boot sensor switch

Has it EVER worked or have you only just noticed it that it should be working?
