Hi. I was hoping someone could help me as I know nothing about cars. My 2002 stilo 1.6 has a problem where the engine cuts out in traffic. This only seems to happen when I've been in low speed traffic for a while. Can be when I'm slowing to a halt or when I'm stationary, but the battery and engine icons light up on the dash and then it cuts out. My mechanic thought it was a hole in the exhaust causing the fuel readings to go weird, but welding that hasn't fixed it. He has also cleaned the butterfly but that hasn't done it.

From reading another post, it sounds like it might be electrical. Maybe the ecu? If it is that, is it likely to be a big/expensive fix? If it isn't that, does anyone have any other ideas? I just don't want to go to a mechanic and throw lots of money at it to try and find the problem.

I'm a bit on edge about the problem as I don't want it to happen halfway up a hill or somehing! So thanks in advance for your help. (And please bear in mind how little I know about cars!). Thanks

Hi Stilo owner with strikingly similar name.

I also had a strikingly similar problem with my JTD. It would cut out at low speeds, mainly in traffic.

It eventually cut out on the motorway and wouldn't start again. It got towed to a garage and they diagnosed the problem as a faulty 'cam position sensor'. It cost me £120 at the garage in 2009. However, it is easy to change yourself and the part shouldn't be too much.

Good luck
