Hello everyone,

I have 2002, 1.6 Stilo.

I was driving on M40 last Monday and all of a sudden gas pedal stopped working, received and ASR error and totally lost engine power. I called RAC, the RAC man asked me to drive out of the motorway. He found several error codes including Cylinder 1,2,3,4 and Ignition Coil 1,2,3,4 errors, and fuel level sensor error, but he could not start the car. In the evening RAC towed the car to the garage which could not find out problem in two days.

After two days, the "decided" to start, but with two cylinders (1 and 4). I changed ignition coils of 2 and 3, although cylinder 3 also started to work number 2 did not. I have checked wiring for ignition coil 2 from coil head to the ECU, and there is no any voltage or current on the cable!

So, I assume that there is a problem with the ECU. So, is there a way to reset it or do I need to buy a new ECU ?

Sorry for my English (as I am only a learner I may have some mistakes and accuracy problems), and I would appreciate any comment about the issue.

Best.

I forgot to say that I have replaced crankshaft position sensor with a new one.

I have checked the gap, and asked another friend to check it once more just to be sure.

If I am right and if it is an ECU problem, should I remap the ECU or simply reset it by removing the battery cable?

hi warwicker! welcome to FF, nice to see anther local!
you say he found cylinder and ignition coil faults, do you have a copy of these fault codes?

should be in the format of 'P####'

for Instance:-

P0200 Injector Circuit Malfunction
P0201 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 1
P0202 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 2
P0203 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 3
P0204 Injector Circuit Malfunction - Cylinder 4
P0261 Cylinder 1 Injector Circuit Low
P0262 Cylinder 1 Injector Circuit High
P0263 Cylinder 1 Contribution/Balance Fault
P0264 Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit Low
P0265 Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit High
P0266 Cylinder 2 Contribution/Balance Fault
P0267 Cylinder 3 Injector Circuit Low
P0268 Cylinder 3 Injector Circuit High
P0269 Cylinder 3 Contribution/Balance Fault
P0270 Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit Low
P0271 Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit High
P0272 Cylinder 4 Contribution/Balance Fault
P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0342 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Low Input
P0343 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit High Input
P0344 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent
P1314 Vertical acc.
P1315 Persistent Misfire
P1371 Ignition Coil - Cylinder 1 - Early Activation Fault
P1372 Ignition Coil - Cylinder 2 - Early Activation Fault
P1373 Ignition Coil - Cylinder 3 - Early Activation Fault
P1374 Crankshaft Position (CKP)/Ignition Coil - Cylinder 4 - Early Activation Fault

to name but a few POSSIBLE faults.

Thank you for the reply richydraper, everytime I check I receive different error codes. Do you know anyone in Coventry who can remap my ECU ? Thanks.

Has your ECU had the update done?

If you suspect the ECU to be faulty why do you want to remap it?

If the ECU is physically damaged no amount of remapping will solve the problem.

But if the software has been corrupted some how, perhaps by a failed remap then uploading a good original file may solve it?

I bought a second hand ECU. So, what I want to try is to copy my car's data from the existing ECU to the one that I bought. I think this is the shortest solution for me?!

Forgot to say, I have tried to ring couple of remapping services that I found on google they are charging something between £125 to £399. If anyoned could help me to virginize / remap / flash (or whatever it is called) the ECU that I bought, I would really appreciate!
thanks.

Second hand ECU's are very difficult to use as they have to be virginised first.

Having your old ECU repaired would be easier.

If your close to Wolverhampton at anytime let me know. I'll read the error codes and take a copy of your original ECU file to send to a friend to take a look at it to see if he can help..

Thank you for the reply Shadeyman. I am in Leamington Spa, and I would have to drive something like 50 miles for Wolverhampton which looks bit scary for me with three cylinders. But, if you could help me about how to virginise an ECU that would be great.

grays garage in warwick are your nearest fiat dealer give em a ring or pop down they Maybe able to help with updates or virginising... Their knowledge is 2nd to none and theyre a VERY reputable place... It only adds to the dealer status that they have awesome customer service. Be polite and curteous and You may Well be able to bung a techie a fist full of 5ers... If You dont ask You dont get

Just looked at this ecu to try and virginise it and was disapointed of the info offered which wasted a lot of my time.
The best looking way was to remove the prog file chip and attach flying leads to the hidden chip contacts, except that it did not work for me and most other observers. Investigation showed that the chip lines were held down internally by the ecu.
I eventually machined a hole in the back exactly to the position recommended in the articles, - except that the stated measurements were incorrect. which is a bit of a shame because I wanted to make an ali plug to stop up the hole. It will have to be a plate now.
I've included a pic of the hole/s and a modified drawing of the correct location for milling.
Tony.
nb, I re-wrote the chip externally with a re-learn file, though probably a new blank chip would work, not sure so didn't do it.

reprogramming the eeprom on the pcb is very difficult - i desolder them for a reliable reprogramming.
With my new (expensive) tool it's possible to revirginise it without removing the eeprom or drilling a hole, but just for hobby use it will not pay for itself very quickly....
a completely blank chip wouldn't work, all identification data has to be present and has to match with the flash contents.

I wont go down that route then!. I was just so annoyed with the false information put on the web about this unit, like strapping the oscillator to kill it. This oscillator refused to run without the 12v supply on the sockets, so why strap it. Lifes never easy, just hope it works ok.
Tony.
