Has anyone had there windows tinted?? Where and how much does a legal tinting cost? Not one that will have to be removed before MOT...

KoArAnG said:I got quoted just over £100 for tints all round by a professional tinting shop and as long as the tints don't stop more than 35% light getting through then they are legal. Another mod my insurance company needs to know about so i have to wait for that one.. (im swapping over to Adrian Flux in the next few weeks)
If you get it done, let us know what it looks like with legal tints on.
Well this is where i got my info ... I stand corrected on the amount of light they can let in as its 25% for the windscreen and 30% for the front sides, so acording to this report, there's nothing stoping you getting them done ?http://www.peterborough.net/lifestyle/articles/carwindows.aspsteve1219 said:Sorry mate but this is wrong, at the moment no tint is allowed forward of the pillars any tint to the rear.
I have had mine done and so far have avoided any problems but no of people that have had to remove their front tints or leave their cars where they were pulled

Traffic officers in Peterborough are issuing a warning to drivers who have had their car windows tinted - you could be breaking the law.
Over the past month, traffic officers from Thorpe Wood Police Station have been stopping vehicles with tinted windows to measure the amount of light they let in.
Up to 15 drivers a day are having their tinted windows checked to see if the level of light they let in reaches the legal minimum. Many of the vehicles stopped have been found to have glass below the required limit.
PC Andy Coop, has been conducting the stop-checks, he said: "An increasing number of tinted windows, supplied by vehicle manufacturers and fitted by other companies, have been found to be below the legal limit.
"Many of the drivers we have stopped were not aware they were breaking the law. Those who were found to have illegal window tints have been offered scrapers to remove the tint at the roadside as an alternative to prosecution.
"However, some drivers have been prosecuted and in more serious cases, their vehicle banned from the road until the fault is rectified."
PC Paul Stubbings, Casualty Reduction Officer, said: "It is not only about conforming to traffic law.
"Excessively tinted glass can also affect road safety. It restricts the driver's vision, especially in dark conditions or bad weather. It also prevents other road users and pedestrians from confirming, through eye contact, that they have been seen."
The Tintman device measures the amount of light transmitted into a vehicle and records the opacity of the glass. Windscreens on vehicles first used before April 1985 must let in 70 percent of light to stay legal. That figure rises to 75 percent for vehicles issued after that date. Front-side windows on all vehicles are required to let in 70 percent of light.
For further information or a demonstration of the Tintman device, contact PC Coop at Thorpe Wood Police Station on 0845 456 456 4.

This was one of my concerns as without a tintman device I haven't got a clue what the cars windows let in pre-tint.. does anyone have any clue on that ?steve1219 said:What you are saying is correct there is nothing saying you cannot do tints but nearly every car is already just in side the limits with out tints even apply a light tint will put you out side the limits. I will try to post the industry directive later.

Neofolis said:You can pretty much spend as little or as much as you like starting from about £10.00 for a can of tinting spray. Your options are basically the spray mentioned which is fairly easy with decent masking, but will give a fiarly poor finish. Tinting sheets which you cut and stick yourself, which the finish is somewhat dependent on ability. Pre-cut tiniting sheets, which also requires some degree of ability, although with a little washing up liquid to slow the initial bond it is not excessively difficult. Professional tinter, as quoted by KoArAnG, which may or may not be a better job than you would do yourself depending on your ability and their ability. The same last three options also apply for tinted glass. Tinted glass is the most expensive option, but will obviously give the best finish, if done professionally. The other advantage of tinted glass is that it can be a one way tint so it can look almost black from outside and still let in 95% of the light, giving normal visibility out of the car or at least not noticeably different.
