Styling Window tinting...

You can buy pre cut tints from a website some where for about £25 for the rear 3 windows and the same again for the front 2, only problem is you gotta put them on your self.

I got quoted just over £100 for tints all round by a professional tinting shop and as long as the tints don't stop more than 35% light getting through then they are legal. Another mod my insurance company needs to know about so i have to wait for that one.. (im swapping over to Adrian Flux in the next few weeks)
If you get it done, let us know what it looks like with legal tints on.

You can pretty much spend as little or as much as you like starting from about £10.00 for a can of tinting spray. Your options are basically the spray mentioned which is fairly easy with decent masking, but will give a fiarly poor finish. Tinting sheets which you cut and stick yourself, which the finish is somewhat dependent on ability. Pre-cut tiniting sheets, which also requires some degree of ability, although with a little washing up liquid to slow the initial bond it is not excessively difficult. Professional tinter, as quoted by KoArAnG, which may or may not be a better job than you would do yourself depending on your ability and their ability. The same last three options also apply for tinted glass. Tinted glass is the most expensive option, but will obviously give the best finish, if done professionally. The other advantage of tinted glass is that it can be a one way tint so it can look almost black from outside and still let in 95% of the light, giving normal visibility out of the car or at least not noticeably different.

its 200 round ere for the whole car; wudnt mind mine done! But fort this was bit expensive as id have to tell the insurance comapny and my premium go up (n)

and im a little bit put off because when i got it done before on a previous punto i had to have the back window tint replaced twice! 1st time because he didnt clean the window down first time properly and i was left like a sticker out line where the dealer stick had been he had remove then once he replaced this for the second rear window tint it got some small air bubbles in the rear window, so back again to have this replace as it looked sh*t then next time he replaced it, the heat stripping on the back window got peeled off; but the tint was ok and just ended up being *ank! Then i sold the car! Just puts me off have the stilo done, although i wudnt mind some securi-fix window tint done! Being the special tint so that if you window is smashed in dosent cave in and make the window alot stronger! Just costs even more and looks the same as a normal window tint though!

Sorry mate but this is wrong, at the moment no tint is allowed forward of the pillars any tint to the rear.

I have had mine done and so far have avoided any problems but no of people that have had to remove their front tints or leave their cars where they were pulled

Well this is where i got my info ... I stand corrected on the amount of light they can let in as its 25% for the windscreen and 30% for the front sides, so acording to this report, there's nothing stoping you getting them done ?http://www.peterborough.net/lifestyle/articles/carwindows.asp
Traffic officers in Peterborough are issuing a warning to drivers who have had their car windows tinted - you could be breaking the law.

Over the past month, traffic officers from Thorpe Wood Police Station have been stopping vehicles with tinted windows to measure the amount of light they let in.

Up to 15 drivers a day are having their tinted windows checked to see if the level of light they let in reaches the legal minimum. Many of the vehicles stopped have been found to have glass below the required limit.

PC Andy Coop, has been conducting the stop-checks, he said: "An increasing number of tinted windows, supplied by vehicle manufacturers and fitted by other companies, have been found to be below the legal limit.

"Many of the drivers we have stopped were not aware they were breaking the law. Those who were found to have illegal window tints have been offered scrapers to remove the tint at the roadside as an alternative to prosecution.

"However, some drivers have been prosecuted and in more serious cases, their vehicle banned from the road until the fault is rectified."

PC Paul Stubbings, Casualty Reduction Officer, said: "It is not only about conforming to traffic law.

"Excessively tinted glass can also affect road safety. It restricts the driver's vision, especially in dark conditions or bad weather. It also prevents other road users and pedestrians from confirming, through eye contact, that they have been seen."

The Tintman device measures the amount of light transmitted into a vehicle and records the opacity of the glass. Windscreens on vehicles first used before April 1985 must let in 70 percent of light to stay legal. That figure rises to 75 percent for vehicles issued after that date. Front-side windows on all vehicles are required to let in 70 percent of light.

For further information or a demonstration of the Tintman device, contact PC Coop at Thorpe Wood Police Station on 0845 456 456 4.

What you are saying is correct there is nothing saying you cannot do tints but nearly every car is already just in side the limits with out tints even apply a light tint will put you out side the limits. I will try to post the industry directive later.

This was one of my concerns as without a tintman device I haven't got a clue what the cars windows let in pre-tint.. does anyone have any clue on that ?
I really can't stand the half tinted look on cars, so i know for sure that if im already on the legal limits or there abouts then im not gonna bother at all.

I had 15% fitted on the front and have been told that I am outside the rules. But have got away with it so far. As you say the half tinted look is awfull thats why I had this done so I could get away with a darker tint at the back without to much of a van look.

Here is that directive, hopefully

@steve, have you got any pictures so we can see what the tint on the front window looks like @ 15%

ive gota agree that it does look pants when just the rear windows are tinted! Maybe if 15% at the front looks alrite then having the rear done in say 35% so there isn't a massive tone change in the tint, would look alright! But also i dont fink if you have 15% at the front and a dark tint on the rear that would end up looking pants n'all! Do they check this at an MOT?

A light colour tint does look nice and gives the car a suttle effect and does seem like you trying to be gangsta/bad boy/chav (ish)

Sorry mate, missed that post..
It was at a local Audio/ tinting shop in Winton Bournemouth can't remember the name of it as I just stopped in when i passed one day. If you really need it then i will get it next time im out that way. I got the price before i had the car so i will go in and get a proper quote and let you know how much. I'll also see what they say about what the light % is before tints etc.

I had a side window explode on my Ulysse a couple of years ago when a stone hit it - Fortunately the kids weren't in the car, as it looked like a bomb had gone off!

Anyway the Autglass guy suggested having a tinting film fitted, because it also keeps the glass in one piece when it shatters - the only thing that put me off was the fact that he said to do it properly you have to deglaze all the windows! Having seen the problems removing one window (and the trim damage!), I decided not to do it.

My point is that I suspect the quotes for doing it vary, depending on wether the guy doing it removes the glass, or does in situ.
