JTD 1.9 - Lacking Power [vacuum leak?]

Right my old bus has now had a proper hissy fit and has no power from tickover to 2500rpm and on from 3500 to red line. Oh and no engine light or beeps.
I can hear the overboost valve hissing away so am assuming it might be the egr valve.
Im wondering if the variable geometry bit of the turbo has or is sticking as i have been through a lot of water with it.

I guess it is the egr as it hasnt been touched in im guessing nearly 3 years. There was a post about blocking it up back along just to test it but havent been able to find it yet so where would i need to put the blanking plate.

Thanks.

Re: Lack of Power egr or something else??

I've never heard the boost valve hissing, but then mine is still down low and maybe out of earshot.

You sure there's not a leak in the boost valve vacuum tubing making the hissing?

As Dave suggests but I'd also take a look at the turbo actuator (looks like a fuel pump at the very front of the engine).

Someone said theirs was making a noise and found it was all rusted up.

You should see it move up/down as the VGT valve controls it.

It's a good starting point.

Re: Lack of Power egr or something else??

right have the egr off and its not too bad, which way does the plunger operate as mine i think the valve is shut. So i assume it will push in from the end??
so if i was to blank it off to see which port would i need to blank.

ta.

Re: Lack of Power egr or something else??

Right as i see it the valve is shut at the moment and i can push the plunger open and the spring will shut it.

It all operates nice and smoothly and so i will now reasemble it and see what happens next. Is there anyway of testing it to see if the valve is working by plugging it back in before refitting to the car. The little plunger on the end piece that unblots operates but not much resitance.

Nope, only hisses when you release the accelerator. Almost like a dump valve?

Re: Lack of Power egr or something else??

Hmmmmmmmmmm well now i have beep beep beep and engine light on now so i guess the over boost has throw its toys out the pram as i moved it today as well.
So i guess its a trip to huttons for a plug in and see what comes up, as its not reving past 3,000 rpm but cleaning the egr did for about 15mins give alot more power.
Wish i hadnt bothered now.

If the valve was disconnected at any time with the ignition switched on, that would give you a fault. If that's the cause, it should go after 3 clear starts.

Lacking Power 1.9JTD 51

Hi everyone, can anyone help?

I recently brought a 51 plate Stilo 1.9 JTD
Ive been driving it at a average speed of 40mph, but when i get over 50-60mph, the engine suddenly lacks power?

What i do know, i believe its not a turbo fault, because as soon as i let my foot off the throttle, speed decreases and the "engine fault light" will go off, and the turbo is restored to its full power.

However if i repeat the same process, of getting to the speed of 50-60. it happens again.

Could it be the EGR Valve, the previous owner did say something about he cleaned a valve, because it was sooted up.

Can anyone help me?
Cheers, Craig. (New Member)

re: JTD 1.9 - Lacking Power [vacuum leak?]

hi Craig,

Could be your egr but im not sure the egr doesnt throw up a engine warning light, This could be your overboost valve as that does and i have one gone again.
Egr is not too bad to clean, There is a guide for the 150 engine and its not to different to yours but gives you the idea what to do.
One word of warning though is you will need a long long allen key to undo the bolt on the bottom pipe.
Best thing to do would be to get the error code read and go from there.

Search egr and overboost valve will help you too.

re: JTD 1.9 - Lacking Power [vacuum leak?]

cool thanks for the info, do you know how much it will cost to find a error code from a garage.

If its the egr valve, and it is sooted up, why does it become in this state? If say the valve is in good condition? Could you explain how this becomes sooted up?

Could it be a problem with a mixture of fuel, or somethink. (sorry no idea when it comes to a Fiat)

Thanks for you help, Craig

re: JTD 1.9 - Lacking Power [vacuum leak?]

Egr is Exhaust gas recirculation and is as it says, Part of the exhaust gases being recycled by the engine to limit pollution.

The soot is just a dirt given off by the burning of fuel and it does tend to stick to the insides of engines and not allot can be done really.
I'm not sure but ring your nearest fiat dealer or ask on here to see if anyone knows if there is a independent fiat specialist nearby.

re: JTD 1.9 - Lacking Power [vacuum leak?]

hey, i don't know that much but ive picked up a few things on here so i hope i can help, if im wrong lol.

my understanding is the egr (exhaust gas recycle) valve basically takes exhaust gases and puts them into the air intake, to lower the amount of oxygen in the compustion process. this is needed as to lower the temperature/pressure of the gasses made in compustion (other wise it would be damaging to the engine) so i pressume the soot/carbon build up is due to the carbon exhausted in exhaust gasses.

on another note, i had an issue with my overboost valve when i bought mine, when i was in third (normally) and gave it some welly, upto 60mph and over 3k revs the engine warning would come on and there would be a lack of power (as i believe, due to the error with the overboost valve it would stay open (as not to damage the turbo) so basically dispurse the presure in the turbo meaning there was no boost comeing from the turbo).
The garage said they cleaned this out as this too can clog up and i havn't had a problem since.

hope this helps

Stuart
