Earlier versions of FES didn't need to be registered to reset the service interval.
Therefore, it would still be cheaper (than paying dealer) for him in the short term to buy a cheap (sub £20ish) ELM327 via ebay and reset the service counter with an earlier (pre v2,31 IIRC) free version ... and he would still have the ELM for later IF he wanted to upgrade FES versions (having tried it & realised how good FES is).

Thanks alot I might consider this afterall... FES sounds pretty damn good, It's starting to sound like I could loose my virginity all over again with FES.

Yea £60 to reset the service I just said "No chance! I'll rather drive around with it on my dash for 10 years just for the sake of you not quickly clearing it"

Ok my old laptop fell off the car roof and bust so I'm looking to buy another, preferabley a cheap and cheerfull one the same as my old laptop.

I purchased one off eBay for £150, turned out to be a bag of s**t so I got my money refunded(via paypal) and posted it back to the seller an hour ago.

Been looking at a few Toughbooks on ebay but I dont think the sub £200 ones will run FES. Minimum of a 1.5 Ghz processor needed I believe?

So my next question is will a Samsung N310 Netbook run FES ok?

The Spec:
Processor: Intel Atom N270
Clock speed: 1.6 GHz
RAM: 1024 MB
Motherboard: Intel 945GSE + ICH7M
Hard Drive: 160 GB
Interfaces / Networking: USB 3, Ethernet, Bluetooth, Wireless networking
Graphics processor: Intel GMA 950
Display: Diagonal size 10.1 inches.
Maximum resolution: 1024×600 Pixels
Audio: Built-in speakers
Dimensions: (W x H x D) 262×30x185mm
Weight 1.2 kg
Available colours: Black, Blue, Other
Battery technology Li-ion
Battery capacity 4000 mAh
Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Home
Webcam: 1.3MP webcam

My mate just had it given to him as part of a mobile phone deal. He said I can have it for £200, boxed brand new and unopened.

Well FES runs OK on my old IBM 1GHz running XP, albeit on 'slow' settings but it does deliver.

Why not go for sale or return if it doesn't suit?

I use FES on an MSI WIND U130 netbook which has an almost identical spec (apart from using the better N450 CPU) to the Samsung N310, and also on my old Sempron 1.8 laptop, and it runs perfectly under both XP & Win7 on both of them (I prefer XP).

Seems a tad pricey for the U130-comparable spec, though (albeit probably not for "going rate" of Samsung's N310) ... I paid £130 for my MSI U130 via Argos-ebay with 12 months full warranty, and I see they've currently got them & others at around the sub-£150 mark ... here's a few links you may find interesting (or possibly for haggling purposes) :-

Thanks very much for the info. Good to know it will run FES with ease. Those links are interesting might be able to get him down on the price, even though all the ones in the links are USED. The one he offered me was purchase brand new just over a week ago as part of a mobile phone deal. The box is still unopened so its untouched with a full samsung warranty.

Yes... it will reset the service interval counter but you will need the ELM327 interface and a registered version of FES.

Earlier versions of FES didn't need to be registered to reset the service interval.

is there anyway that i can download the earlier version. have the elm327 1.4 and the lastest version of fes but dont have the funds at the moment to buy the full version and i only want to reset the service intervals..

will buy the full version as it seems to be a handy bit of kit just want to get ridof the sevice coupon rubbish at the moment

There's loads of ex British Gas CF-27s and ex AA CF-28s about but they're both too slow for FES. CF-27 is 266 MHz and CF-28 is 800 MHz.

The Samsung N310 at 1.6 GHz should be fine.

I run FES on a netbook with a N270 cpu - no issues at all

I bought two of the Argos "refurb" MSI U130 units, and both were absolutely brand new & untouched & still sealed in the factory box ... I suspect the "refurb description" is actually a marketing ploy to allow mass sales at very reduced prices (I bought mine nearly a year ago, and they've sold hundreds/maybe-thousands since then).

They're quite a sweet little machine once you get used to the 10inch screen (I use reading glasses due to age, but I can still read the larger text size that FES uses), and they're cheap to buy extra batteries & 12v incar adaptors for.

Here's an earlier version (v2.21) linked from Yani's site :-

thanks for the link after i finally managed to download (rubbish internet ex 9)

It might have been one of the earlier versions that had the service reset as a free function. I'm not quite sure when it became a "registered version only" option ... Perhaps try v2.1 or v2.0 from this "old version" archive :-

I suspect that once you play with & see its full capabilities you may well register to get all the newer & upgraded facilities of the newer versions as well ... and it's a VERY fair/good price for what it can do, & Yani rightly deserves every penny.

My daughter found out I planned to purchase a laptop for £200 from a friend that he had free from a mobile phone deal.

So, she talked me into giving her the £200 and shes had a new mobile phone from the same company as my friend so he gets £50 for introducing her and I get a brand new Samsung R530 15.6in laptop.

Intel Celeron Dual Core Processor T3500 (2.13GHz)
3GB DDR3 1066Mhz RAM
320GB SATA hard drive
15.6in (1366 x 768 WXGA) gloss super bright display
DVD SuperMulti dual layer optical drive
Intel GMA X-4500DVMT graphics
0.3MP webcam
3 x USB ports
802.11 b/g/N WiFi
Windows 7 Home Premium

Should be here some time next week. Problem solved....:D

i went to Maplin yesterday and bought

2x 560pF ceramic disc capacitors (Maplin code 'WX65' @ 21p each)
2x 100 ohm resistors (Maplin code 'M100R' @ 24p each)

so all out 90p

i de-soldered the 120 ohm resistor from the PCB between CAN-H (Pin 6) and CAN-L (Pin 14) i will be soldering from where the old resistor was to pin 4 & 5 (both grounds) like this

CAN-H track on PCB > 100 Ohm Resistor > 560pF Cap. > Pin 6
CAN-L track on PCB > 100 Ohm Resistor > 560pF Cap. > Pin 14

as long as you ground the circuit from between the PCB Chip and the OBD connector itself then you wont have any issues with it. if you wanted to you could just put the resistor and cap. between Pin 6 and Pin 4 then Pin 14 and Pin 5.

the way the ELM datasheet shows to terminate the CAN lines is
CAN line > Resistor > Capacitor > Ground

im no expert in electronics but just out of interest what would happen if the resistor and cap. were installed CAN line > cap. > resistor > ground?

Sweet!! ... Well done, my Shadey friend with the Shadey kids :p :)

You gotta love those "Whack-A-Mole" deals. ;) ... Now all you've gotta do is get £25 for the "split commission" from your mate, and get a £50 contribution back from your wallet-raper (= Fat Chance) and you're well away. :p

Its my birthday in April(ignore the dates in my profile), just shown the "Shadey" daughter what she can spend her new found wealth on.

OBDKey: Genuine OBD2 WLAN Car Scan Tool.

But as you said earlier, "Fat Chance"....(n)
