Hi all there is a clunking sound coming from my front drivers side it's a 1.8 02 3dr it only happens when decelerating both on the straight and more noticably on a l/h bend, I have tried to get it to clunk under acceleration but it's not there. I had 2 new tyres on the drivers side last week and the bloke in the tyre place jacked it up on the front underneath not on the jacking point (i was in the office paying)to change both!! what would this damage ?? :confused:

You can jack it on the holes where a lift would attach or on the subframe, so it shouldn't be that. I reckon you've got a worn bush on the wishbone causing the clunking so check for play in the front wheels (y)
 
thanks for the advice my nuts are tight :cry:will have a look on the weekend and see if the wishbone bush has moved has anyone got a before and after pic ???

You probably won't (and shouldn't!) be able to see any difference in the wishbone bushes but a tiny bit of play in the wishbone ball joint can make a lot of movement in the wheel. Jack the front wheels up, grab both sides of a wheel and give it a wiggle, you really shouldn't have any play at all... if you do, then that might account for the clunking and means that the ball joint is worn (y)

it's an easy repair too. whole new wishbone rather than cocking about with balljoints. not too expensive either
 
id's say the ball joint is by far the most likley thing.

if your shock absorbers totally goosed though, they can also knock. does the car feel secure at high speed or on bumpy corners?

I changed both of mine recently for £35 a side from a place on ShmeeShmay. I can give you the link and the eLearn instructions if you need them (y) it's not too bad a job, just a bit time consuming and it helps if you have a breaking bar as the wishbone bolts are tight... very tight :eek: You'll defo need a torque wrench as well...

Hi,
i have a similar problem. My car clunks when i turn left. I can hear it underneath the front of the car. The car itself drives perfect apart from this annoying clunk that bangs underneath everytime i turn left. Help!! Any ideas
 
It sounds like the same thing.. Mine has got the same problem.. clunks on acceleration and deceleration and when going over bumps - took a look at the wishbone and my bushes are hanging out.. think they are £65 from partsgateway - might be wrong.. but next job on my list..
