Start car in a morning works fine.

Stop car, 1 minute later Start Car works fine.

Stop car, 1 minute later Wont start, sometimes I'm sat in the car waiting for an hour for it to start. EG - Waiting at Tescos in freezing cold weather!

So basically it will start if I leave it for a while "few hours" and has no problems starting in a morning but if I'm stopping and starting quite frequently it doesn't like that !

What happens is the Petrol Pump just keeps Ticking rather then ticking once
I turn the key to start and it just wont. Then I have to wait till it stops ticking.

I get a message saying Security Failure fault blabla and a spanner pops up !

Having done a code scan on my car the only problem found is an o2 sensor
Took it to a garage they couldn't fix it so they sent me to Stoneacre.

Stoneacre say i need a new ECU £435 fitted programmed blabla, they happily charged me £70 just to tell me that piece of info!

can get an ECU on eBay for around £150 but what are your guys thoughts?

Is it really the ECU? I mean my mechanic friend doesn't seem to think so he thinks it could be the o2 sensor since that's the code it fetches up

I'm just lost for what to do keep getting ripped by everyone! anyone had similar problems????

Thanks

I don't know if I'm talking out my hat or not here, but I had this issue when I had an old Primera.

The AA chap said that because I had only driven it a matter of a hundred yards or so to move it from one parking spot to another, it was sort of stuck on full throttle and wouldn't start.

The way to get it started was to keep the throttle hard down while turning the key, ignoring the choking and rattling noises, until it roared into life.

I'm probably totally wrong with regards the Stilo, which is a much newer car!

Oh - I wouldn't give Stoneacre my toenail clippings, let alone pay them to work on my car.

More than likely the security ring just behind ignition (intermittent circuit break). If this breaks then it wont ID the key properly and stops you from starting the engine.

Fairly common on a 1.6 I believe - try Searching for more info.

Can't see it being the ECU

Stilo starting problem (Please read techy's!)

Basicaly my stilo

1.6 16v

Will not start when it is warm.

I get 'Security failure loost connection', a padlock icon appears and a little spanner.

The petrol pump just keeps picking away until the engine finaly cools down and then i can start it again.

Lookers italia say its the Headgasket ( No signs of headgasket going, car runs perfectly fine recently serviced etc )

Stoneacre said its the ECU ( most likely not )

stilo/49812-security-failure-engine-fault

Do you think that i have the same problem where i need a new 'Engine Injection computer'???

Please help!!!

Same response you got to this problem back in January.

Dave.

Re: Stilo starting problem (Please read techy's!)

Yea but Dave why would it do that when warm and not when cold? also takes 5 minutes to start doing it after stopping the car when its warm.

Re: Stilo starting problem (Please read techy's!)

Plastics and metals (im sure) can expand with heat, this could cause a poor connection not to work in the manner described when the car has warmed up, possibly?

Check the connections for the immobiliser system connection to the pickup ring.

Its something you can try as was suggested before and im sure is far cheaper than any of the other suggestions you have been offered.

Re: Stilo starting problem (Please read techy's!)

Will get my friend mechanic to look into what you suggested and get back to you thanks

Re: Stilo starting problem (Please read techy's!)

Hi All
This is going to sound stupid but it’s true, I had a fault on a car a few years ago that took forever to find, very similar car died when hot started when cooled down.
It turned out to be a porous heater hose, when warmed up it fired a very fine jet of water onto the electronic ignition module causing it to short, once the water pressure dropped the jet of water stopped and the residual heat from the engine dried out the ignition and the car started again.
The jet was almost invisible the only way I found it was when I was poking around the water hit my hand. It wasn’t even enough to drop the water level noticeable.
Anyway that’s the story might be worth a very careful look at the hoses when the engine is hot, maybe around the ecu connections or anywhere the hoses are near the electrics.
Good luck

I have had a very similar problem and changed the crankshaft sensor, key aerial around ignition, oil temperature switch, oil pressure switch and changed the relays around and the problem still persists. This only leaves the camshaft sensor and ignition ECU!!

I just bought a secondhand Fiat Examiner (bit extreme, I know!!), so next time it does not start on my drive, I'll plug it in and see if it can find anything as it does not store any faults when it eventually starts again?

Just orderd a security ring to check it then

£5.50+Vat

sound about right?

Try interchanging the relays next to the battery, worked on mine...

First thing we tried is interchanging the relays

the ticking noise comes from them as well

when you unplug the faulty area of the said relay it stops

but if u change it for another it still happens im afraid ;(

Tried the security ring just behind the ignition, still no joy.

And as of today its started doing it in the morning and i didnt even use it yesterday at all.

Any other ideas ? ill be getting rid soon if i dont get it fixed it runs perfect otherwise.
