The problem is persisting! After paying £47.00 for the oil top-up, which apparently was causing the engine not to start? The car was towed back to the garage after failing to start again. Another inspection was carried, and this time it was diagnosed as a faulty petrol pump unit. I was quoted £330.00 to have it changed. I took a new pump, which I had, with me to the garage, and changed it in 20 min in their car park as I was not going to pay that amount of money! This did not cure the problem, so I owned up to them that I had just changed the pump and that the problem was not cured. They understood why I did this, and said I was to leave the car with them for further diagnosis. I received a call a few days later informing me that it was now a bad earth connection to the pump, and that it now started OK.

Went to pick the car up, but would not start on first attempt, tried again and it fired up. The pump that I fitted was new, but it was noisy! I remembered why I had it laying around, I'd changed it for a secondhand one because of this noise. I Could not take it back to the place of purchase as I had had it laying around for so long, the warranty had run out. However, being noisy has done me a favour, I went to start the car tonight, and it wound not start on any attempt? I could not hear the pump in MAR, which you would normally hear, so this would suggest that it is an electrical supply problem to the pump?

This was obviously happening with the original pump, but due to the fact it was so quite, never new if it was working or not.

Any ideas??

I'd be backing away now in case the lunacy was catching:)

Your fuel pump N40 earths through the inertia switch near the passenger's feet so I'd do some checks there to see if the pump is getting earth or the switch itself was playing up. Push the inertia switch reset button fully in as a poor contact there would cause your problems

Specifically, see if pin 3 (it shows black/blue wire) on the Inertia switch connector at I50 is showing connection to earth. Check pin 1 to see if it is going to earth nicely

Or, when the fuel pump isn't working, you could supply earth directly at the inertia switch Pin 3 and hear if the pump starts up, then you'll know for certain the problem lies there

Over in the passenger footwell. You can feel the top of the push down button of the inertia switch if you feel over the top of the black foot kick guard around the door frame base. You'll need to remove the kick guard to get at the switch
