General stilo top speeds!!

General stilo top speeds!!

anyway the 2nd gear of the 1.8 is really scary: ANY 1.8 owner CAN CONFIRM?
The 2nd gear is FANTASTIC.

Just forgot to say that when I reached 85mph in 2nd gear I was in Germany of course.

Is the speedo accurate ??????????????

I maxed mine out travelling South on the A1 towards London, my speedo read 136mph, in my mirror was a 5 series beemer flashing it's headlights so I moved over without dropping any speed and he just shot straight past me!

(a 540 on closer inspecton as it passed me)

My brother had an indicated 130mph out of mine, personally I have never, and never would, been anywhere near that.

I've had my speedo reading 147mph in my Abarth, I've got photo evidance if anyone is a disbeliver, I think I was about 1/2 an rpm off the limiter so I can't see any more speed left

Now that must have been good at that speed taking a photo :) Not the first thing you think of when going that fast!

I pushed mine to 220 kph (little over 136 mph) by speedo, (max top speed in my manual is 200kph), and it was pretty easy (no slow motion from 180 kph upwards, just slips to up to 210, and then some time to 220).

Btw, twincamms, BMW that passed you (the 540) is an V8 engine with 4,4 litres and 282 hp, top speed is electonicaly limited to 250 kph (155 mph), if limiter removed, possible up 180> mph.

So, you shouldn't be ashame that he passed you.

The point is, I think, that speedos are grossly inaccurate. Even in identical cars, both doing the same speed, the speedo's could have vastly different readings.

On a test track in 1988 my RS Turbo went off the clock easily (140mph). It was totally standard and being driven by a Ford Engineer. The true speed was 126mph, which is more or less what it is supposed to do. I forget the figures, but the speedo was out by an average of 14%. Strangely, a true 70 was shown as 68, then it was wildly over from 70 to 140. As long as the speedo isn't out by more than 2mph from 0 to 70, they (the manufacturers) are happy.

This was the case in 88 and I don't think anything's changed judging by the " my car does 150" comments.

To be totally honest I knew that speedo readings became a little unreliable at speed but it still pisses of all the xr2 drivers when you show them the picture after they have called your car "a womans shopping car"

All very, very true.

And I don't see how anyone who drive's an eighties/nineties fiesta can even think about dissing a Stilo

Had the Abarth up to around the 130 mark on the M6 toll, driving back from the Rally a few weeks ago.

Really pissing off a guy in his TDi, who reckoned he could have me from the toll booth coz I had flashed him earlier to get him to pull over into the empty lane :)

another point with speedos is that most of them on new cars these days are electronic and not cable so there should be very little margin of difference between new(ish) cars now.

Nice one Stuart ...I love it. I try to keep a mental note of how many Golfs I **** off!!

Had mine up to about 125, some idiot in a Ford Cougar wouldn't let me pass...

just 85 mph...

...ops I forgot to say I was in 2nd gear!

Surely the rev limiter would have kicked in by then? Or is the stilo very, very tall geared? Mine kicks in about 70mph and by them I'm doing over 6k revs!
I think you meant 3rd gear?!!

confirm 2nd gear..not 3rd
maybe was just below 85...it could have been 80mph but was very impressing...
rev autolimit came in just in time...
I find the 2nd gear of the 1.8 absolutely impressing: any 1.8 around could confirm?
