My passenger side wiper has stopped altogether , the driver one still works but a strange clunking sound comes from the other side. I have just read on this forum how to remove the wipers to hopefully get at the underneath part ( beneath the panel ) , but would welcome any advice as to how the wiper underneath can be re attached.

Re: one wiper wont work

Gaining access to the wiper mechanism is by far the most difficult part (at least it is the 1st time you do it) so take your time.

Removing the actual wiper mechanism is a doddle (y)

Re: one wiper wont work

Here's some piccies which might help. Someone had that same problem quite recently where the arm pops off the motor linkage and it needs a VERY firm push to click them back into place again. front wiper mechanism.JPG

Thanks for that ,next question ! how ithe best way to gain access to the wiper mechanism ( I can maybe tackle it at the weekend )

Re: one wiper wont work

You'll probably want to read this if you haven't already.

If I did that again then I'd buy a proper wiper arm puller which can be bought from specialized stores.

The best tip I can give for removing the scuttle plate is to photograph it before you start (especially near the bonnet hinge). If you look at many Stilos, that have had after-market alarms fitted, then it's often very obvious the scuttle has been removed (and frankly looks a mess) because they’ve not been refitted properly. You'll most likely need to buy some new clips (3 hold it in place) and with some care you should be able to do a neat job.

Good luck (y)

Re: one wiper wont work

Had a go at the weekend , been told I need to replace the linkage on the passenger side as its worn. Went to a Fiat dealer and they can only sell me the entire wiper mechanism for £140. Where would be the best place to buy just the linkage (is that possible ) It actually doesnt look that worn to me , maybe just the rubber bit inside the hole needs replacing to make it fit more snuggly , or am I way off the mark ?

Re: one wiper wont work

You can only buy the complete assembly and not parts of it, unfortunately. Which joint specifically is causing the problem? Can you mark it on one of the pictures above? (just do a right click on one of the above and "save as").
Tell us which joint is the problem one and you might get some ideas from the forum. A cheap fix might be possible to stop the lever springing off the pivot

It is the lower bar on the left of the picture. I think the rubber around the hole is worn , could that be why it has come off. It seems a bit drastic to buy the whole assembly for such a small bit.

Re: one wiper wont work

Yes that's exactly what happens. The centre plastic bush has a domed interior which is meant to fit snugly over the spherical bearing but once that's worn then there's nothing to stop it popping off under load

Maybe you can try something like this. There's a hole just above the bearing link and a tie wrap can be used like this to keep the arm from moving off the bearing.

Note how the tie wrap is routed, with the tie wrap tang down through the hole, around the link and then back up through the hole again.
The link rotates around 90 degrees, the same as the sweep of the wipers so it should keep it all together, certainly no worse than just hoping it stays there in the next heavy downpour of rain

Brilliant , will have a try of that , better than forking out a £140. Thanks so much.

Re: one wiper wont work

I think I would tackle this in two ways :chin:

1st ..there are those fixings that you push on the end of pram axles to keep the wheels on [cant think ATM what there called ]:bang:

2nd - space allowing I would drill a fine hole in the shaft and fit a washer over the shaft and split pin in the hole .

Scuttle panel removal

Hi all, this is my first post as im new :p.

Wondered if you guys could help, im changing the wiper mechinism in my girlfriends stilo (ive just sold my coupe for an impreza and im missing her sooo much!) but im a bit worried about breaking the scuttle pannel while getting to it.

Does it just clip off or is it screwed from the inside someware as its stuck on pretty well, basically if i just keep tugging on it will come off?

Thanks iain

re: Scuttle panel removal & access to wiper linkage

It's held with three pop clips (make sure you get some replacements as they often break - and are essential when refitting).

It just takes a good tug to get if off but I'd recommend you take some photos first, mainly at the ends, as it can be very confusing when you try to refit it.

Try the search tool as this might pickup a few more tips.

re: Scuttle panel removal & access to wiper linkage

hi all

trying to get the scuttle off, but it is stuck like grim death!

have tried tugging, pulling, prying, hitting, bending.... getting nowhere.

once the three bungs are removed that hold it down in the engine bay, which way does it need to be pulled?

straight up?
down towards the engine?
up the face of the windscren?

thanks

Jed

re: Scuttle panel removal & access to wiper linkage

You need to pull it up and away from the screen - but try not to put too much of a bend long the edge that fits snug with the windscreen (taken those photos ;))

It's most likely trapped around the ends that overlap the wings. Unfortunately taking it off the very first time is always the most difficult and you'll never get it back quite so snug.

re: Scuttle panel removal & access to wiper linkage

My scuttle was well and truly stuck to the screen so you probably have the same. I needed to carefully prise and work the top of the scuttle away from the screen. I used a very wide wooden wedge

Once you've broken the seal of grime and grease (and hopefully not the windscreen) then the scuttle will be free and you take it in through the engine bay

Changing the wiper motor is blissfully easy in comparison to removing and refitting the scuttle

Thanks you for some very useful information!! :)

I have followed all the instruction and got access to the wiper linkage.
I there found out that both arms are loose and tried to put them back on the motor linkage. But both arms are very loose and do pop up out again.

So my question is...Do I have to whack them a bit to get them to fit. Perhaps by removing the motor and try to put them there and tap them lightly with the hammer?

....or are they just worn out and I must buy a new wiper linkage?? They do not seem particularly worn though.

Here is a picture of it...

I know that this thread has not had some post in sometime, but I do hope you can answer my question...

You don't say what the original problem is and why you're working on the wipers. If the linkage became detached on its own then they are worn and will need either replacement or a modification to make sure they are unable to detach again

They do "pop" on so don't use a hammer, just firm squeezing with a couple of strong grips and you feel them snap on. But it will be a waste of time if that's what happened previously and they detached on their own because it will quickly happen again
