hi, can anybody in the know tell me what the vacuum advance thing does that is screwed to the distributor? and how to test if its working as i have been told mine isnt? :-( i have an uno 1.0ie 1993 with the 999cc engine in. also if this part isnt working will the car use a bit more fuel as it seems to have been doin lately? can this part be bought seperately from the distributor and fitted easily too? thanks

It should advance the ignition timing when accelerating, giving more power and stops hesitations etc, or something like that. To test it, pull the pipe off the unit and see if you can blow air freely through the unit, if you can, the diaphragm inside is knackered. It can be changed without taking off the distributor, i think it's just 2 screws and a plastic rod that needs prising off from inside the dizzy with the cap and rotor etc. removed.

£10.28 +VAT etc.

thanks for the advice, i checked the pipe and it was split but has now been replaced. i will order a new part then as mine definately doesnt do anything at the moment. thanks

The idea is you shouldnt really notice it doing anything ;) its only when they go wrong that you notice - such as lumpy idle, hesitancy and just a lacking engine.

Before you shell out, as louie said - check the diaphram in the V.A.U to see if air passes through it or not. If not, then no need to buy a new one :)
